Speaking to leading global news agencies, Ambassador Do Hung Viet emphasized that the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam holds great importance in reviewing 40 years of Renewal and in defining Vietnam’s development goals and orientations.

On January 14, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, chaired a meeting and briefing with international media in New York (USA) on the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
The event was attended by representatives of the United Nations Secretariat’s Department of Global Communications, along with journalists from more than 20 major international news agencies, including Reuters, CNBC, Le Monde, Al Jazeera, NHK, Nikkei, Kyodo News, Asahi Shimbun, Xinhua, CCTV, RIA Novosti, TASS, and SABC News.
In his remarks, Ambassador Do Hung Viet outlined preparations for the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, affirming that it is an event of special significance, reviewing 40 years of the Renewal process, assessing the implementation of the Resolution of the 13th National Congress, and defining the country’s development goals and orientations for the next stage.
The Ambassador highlighted several notable new points in the Congress documents, including the “three strategic breakthroughs” to propel the country forward in the new era—namely institutional reform, human resource development, and accelerated infrastructure development; the establishment of a new growth model driven primarily by science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation; the identification of the private sector as one of the most important driving forces of the economy; and the designation of environmental protection, alongside socio-economic development, as a central task.
On foreign affairs, Ambassador Do Hung Viet noted that for the first time, the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam will define foreign affairs and the promotion of international integration, together with national defense and security, as key and regular tasks. He reaffirmed that Vietnam will continue to pursue an independent, self-reliant foreign policy of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development; multilateralization and diversification of external relations; equality and mutual benefit; and to be a friend, reliable partner, and an active, responsible member of the international community, while ensuring the highest national and ethnic interests on the basis of fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.

On this occasion, Ambassador Do Hung Viet also briefed the media on Vietnam’s socio-economic development situation and its notable foreign affairs achievements in 2025.
In response to questions from international news agencies regarding Vietnam’s priorities at the United Nations in 2026, Ambassador Do Hung Viet affirmed that Vietnam would continue to strongly support multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in the global governance system. He emphasized Vietnam’s policy of increasingly proactive and active participation in addressing common global challenges, including efforts to effectively assume the role of President of the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in April–May 2026.
The meeting was held in an open atmosphere, helping international media gain a clearer understanding of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, as well as Vietnam’s development orientation and foreign policy priorities in the period ahead.
