Cargo throughput at Hai Phong's seaport system in the first 10 months of 2026 was estimated at 182.442 million tons, up 12.11% year on year.

Strong growth across multiple sectors

The expansion of Hai Phong's transport sector is reflected in its growth figures for the first 10 months of 2026. Total revenue from transportation, warehousing, transport support services, postal and courier services in the city was estimated at more than VND 171.758 trillion, up 20.82% year on year. In October, revenue reached VND 18.3702 trillion, an increase of 25.4%. Notably, strong growth was recorded across almost all segments, from freight and passenger transport to transport support services.

These figures reflect rising transportation demand alongside the expansion of manufacturing, trade and imports-exports. As industrial parks and economic zones attract more investment projects and manufacturing facilities expand their capacity, demand for transporting raw materials and finished goods is also increasing. Transport is therefore not merely a service supporting production but also a vital link in the supply chain, directly affecting delivery schedules, production costs and businesses' access to markets.

The city's seaport advantages and strategic position as a gateway to international trade continue to underpin the sector's development. In the first 10 months of 2026, cargo throughput at Hai Phong's seaports was estimated at 182.442 million tons, up 12.11% from the same period in 2025.

Passenger transport also posted solid growth. Revenue from this segment in the first 10 months of 2026 was estimated at more than VND 7.777 trillion, up 18.65%. Warehousing and transport support services also continued to make a substantial contribution to overall growth. Revenue from these services was estimated at nearly VND 80.921 trillion over the 10-month period, up 20.96%.

Capitalizing on advantages and expanding development opportunities

Growth in transport activity depends not only on cargo volumes and travel demand but also directly on infrastructure capacity. In Hai Phong, the seaport system, particularly the Lach Huyen port area, is providing a significant advantage in attracting international shipping routes and strengthening the city's position on the regional logistics map.

According to Bui Nguyen Khoi, Director of the Hai Phong Maritime Administration, port infrastructure in the Lach Huyen area has been developed to modern standards and can accommodate vessels of up to 200,000 DWT and approximately 400 meters in length. Its capacity to handle large vessels is strengthening Hai Phong's role as an international gateway port while enabling direct connections to trans-Pacific and European shipping routes. This gives businesses greater opportunities to reduce logistics costs, shorten transit times and improve transport efficiency.

This advantage is particularly significant as global supply chains continue to adjust and requirements for delivery times and logistics costs become increasingly demanding. The ability to accommodate large container vessels and operate direct shipping routes to key markets gives importers and exporters in northern Vietnam more transportation options and reduces their reliance on foreign transshipment ports.

In the final months of 2026, demand for freight services supporting manufacturing, imports-exports and consumer spending ahead of the Lunar New Year is expected to continue rising. This presents an opportunity for transport companies to expand their operations, while also requiring them to prepare proactively in terms of vehicles, personnel, cargo-handling capacity and transport organization. Amid continued volatility in fuel prices and international conditions, cost control, service quality and transport safety are becoming increasingly important.

The growth momentum in transport is also linked to the need to renew the growth model and make effective use of the city's marine economy advantages, in line with Resolution No. 11-NQ/TU dated July 15, 2026, issued by the Hai Phong Party Committee's Executive Committee, on strengthening leadership and direction to achieve GRDP growth targets for the second half of 2026 and the 2026-2030 period.
