Lunar New Year has long been a sacred time for family reunions, but heading into the Year of the Horse, more and more Vietnamese are choosing travel instead of the traditional ‘return home for Tet’.

Tet has always been the most important time of the year for Vietnamese people, a moment to return home, gather with family, and honor ancestors. However, in the modern life, Tet travel is becoming a popular choice, signaling a clear shift in mindsets and life values.

Many young families, couples, or friend groups choose trips in the early days of the year as a way to relax, recharge, and enjoy rare holidays. Short getaways, resort stays, retreats, nature homestays, or slow-paced experiential journeys are preferred over crowded, rushed tours.

Changes in modern family structures also shape this trend. Nuclear families, singles, and young couples are increasingly common, leading to more flexible ways of celebrating Tet. Some families travel with grandparents or parents instead of holding traditional Tet at the hometown.

Even when traveling far, most Vietnamese still maintain basic Tet rituals like the New Year's Eve ceremony, greeting loved ones, and staying connected with family via technology. Many combine trips with exploring Tet culture in other regions, joining spring festivals, and enjoying traditional cuisine in fresh ways.

According to the online travel platform Agoda, interest in domestic travel during Tet 2026 has risen compared to the previous year. Da Lat leads searches thanks to its cool weather and festive atmosphere, with a 44% increase.

Phu Quoc ranks second with a 41% surge, attracting beach lovers and family vacationers. Followed by Nha Trang and Da Nang, which boosted by stunning coastlines and entertainment options, while Vung Tau enters the top five with a 31% rise...

The Tet 2026 travel landscape reveals a transforming society: from formality to experiences, from pressure to balance. Today's Vietnamese allow themselves to choose the most suitable way to welcome the new year, as long as they preserve the spirit of reunion and core values of the spring occasion.
