Chairman of the Hai Phong People’s Committee Le Ngoc Chau has inspected operations at two terminals of Lach Huyen port and worked with leaders of Hateco Group JSC.
Chairman of the Hai Phong People’s Committee Le Ngoc Chau inspected operations at terminals No. 5 and 6 of Lach Huyen port and held a working session with leaders of Hateco Group JSC. on the morning of August 2.
At the meeting, Tran Van Ky, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hateco Group, reported that its project, covering terminals No. 5 and 6, spans a total area of 73 ha.
The port is capable of simultaneously accommodating two ultra-large container vessels of up to 200,000 DWT (18,000 TEU or more) and a maximum vessel length of 400 m.
After over 30 months of construction, with more than 3 million safe working hours, the project was completed two months ahead of schedule.
The Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HHIT) welcomed its first commercial vessel on February 6 and was officially inaugurated on April 5.
This is Vietnam’s first smart port, featuring automated entry/exit gates and semi-automated wharves. It is equipped to receive the world’s largest vessels traveling directly from distant regions such as the US’s West and East Coasts, Europe, and India. Since operations began, the HHIT has posted impressive performance figures, achieving a handling capacity of 30 containers per hour.
At the meeting, Ky proposed that the city promptly start construction of a post-port traffic route from terminal No. 3 to terminal No. 6 and Tan Vu–Lach Huyen 2 bridge; request the Ministry of Construction to quickly invest in expanding Lach Huyen channel and adding a turning basin in front of terminals No. 5 and 6 to safely accommodate 200,000 DWT vessels; and consider allocating land for building residential areas for specialists, staff, and workers at the port and within Cat Hai special zone.
Hateco Group also suggested that the city consider and approve its research and investment in several new projects, including Tien Lang airport industrial park (Zone A) and other industrial parks within the southern Hai Phong economic zone; Binh Giang 2 and 4 industrial parks; Tu Ky 1 industrial park; Hung Dao industrial park; and other projects such as Ninh Giang inland waterway port (Luoc river), a mixed-use urban-commercial-services area, and a logistics hub in Tien Lang.
Given the urgency of these projects, the city pledged to expedite construction once they are approved. Regarding residential development for port specialists and workers, leaders of the Management Board of Economic Zones and Cat Hai special zone will propose site options for Hateco to consider. The city was also committed to accompanying and supporting the group in studying and implementing new projects in line with regulations.
After personally inspecting operations at the HHIT and hearing reports and recommendations from departments and agencies, Chairman Le Ngoc Chau expressed his appreciation for the scale, construction pace, and operational capacity of the HHIT.
Despite being newly operational, the HHIT has already welcomed the largest container vessels ever to dock at the port, reinforcing Hai Phong's growing position in the global supply chain, boosting international trade, and serving as a driving force for the city’s socio-economic development, said Chau.
The chairman urged Hateco Group and the HHIT to work closely with the city People’s Committee, departments, and agencies to review and consolidate proposals for ministries and Central bodies to soon implement key transport and maritime infrastructure projects to ensure efficient operations.
