Hai Phong seaport witnessed remarkable growth in the first half of 2025, with record-breaking cargo volumes and vessel traffic.
The number of sea vessels arriving at Hai Phong ports reached 8,875 trips in the first six months of 2025, an increase of 625 trips compared to the same period last year, according to Bui Nguyen Khoi, Director of the Hai Phong Maritime Administration.
This surge contributed to a notable rise in cargo volume, with a total of 56.1 million tons handled, up from 44.5 million tons in the same period of 2024. This impressive growth comes amid ongoing global and domestic shipping challenges caused by disrupted supply chains and shifting tariff policies.
Hai Phong’s Tan Cang International Container Terminal (TC-HICT) continued to maintain high throughput, consistently handling over 120,000 TEUs per month.
For Hai Phong Port JSC., the city’s largest port enterprise, the first half of 2025 was particularly vibrant. General Director Nguyen Tuong Anh reported that in May, the company, along with its partner, officially launched terminals No. 3 and 4, equipped with the most modern facilities available, at Hai Phong International Gateway Port in Lach Huyen.
The company actively expanded market share and introduced new shipping services at Tan Vu and HTIT ports, while modernizing vessel operations. As a result, the number of large ships coming to the port, cargo volume, and revenue increased, and workers received stable and growing incomes.
Several other port enterprises in Hai Phong also achieved strong growth in the first half of the year, including VIP Green Port, Nam Dinh Vu, Hai An, and Nam Hai Dinh Vu.
Inland waterway transport also saw robust activity in the first half of 2025, with 8.6 million tons of cargo delivered to Hai Phong ports, up 6% from the same period in 2024.
Hai Phong’s role as an international transshipment hub is gaining momentum, as evidenced by 9.6 million tons of transit cargo handled in the first half of the year, double the figure from the same period last year and reaching 97% of the full-year target for 2025.
According to a TC-HICT representative, in order to ensure growth in cargo throughput, the unit has partnered with shipping lines to launch new routes, especially direct ones to the US and Europe.
This July, Hai Phong Port JSC. will partner with SITC Group and SITC-Dinh Vu Logistics Co., Ltd. to open the first inland container depot (ICD) in Lach Huyen port area.
The venture combines Hai Phong Port’s operational capacity with SITC’s global logistics strength. Following the completion of phase 1, the partners plan to expand the project from 30 to 50 ha by 2030.
Meanwhile, just three months after becoming operational, Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (berths No. 5 and 6 in Lach Huyen area) set a productivity record of 42 moves per hour per crane. The terminal has repeatedly broken records for handling the largest vessels ever to dock at Hai Phong.
In July 2025, Hateco became the first terminal operator in Vietnam to successfully deploy an automated gate system and truck appointment scheduling (TAS). As a result, 100% of container trucks entering and exiting the terminal now process electronic gate orders and schedule their arrival in advance. The automated gate system has reduced gate transaction times to under 30 seconds.
Amid this robust growth, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has recently signed Decision No. 1497/QD-TTg approving the investment policy for terminals No. 9, 10, 11, and 12 at Lach Huyen Port.
This serves as both a driving force and an attractive advantage for Hai Phong seaport to reach further into the global maritime arena, welcoming more vessels and cargo. In the immediate term, the goal is to exceed the 2025 target of 112 million tons of cargo handled through Hai seaport.
