Proving product quality

Established in 2011, Xuyen Viet Aquaculture Cooperative is a typical example of high-tech aquaculture, applying a river-fish farming model in ponds that offers multiple advantages. The model enables the cooperative to increase output per unit of land while improving the quality of marketable fish. Its total annual output of aquaculture products under production and processing partnerships reaches 10,000 tons.

After more than 15 years of production and trials with various fish species, Xuyen Viet Aquaculture Cooperative has identified tilapia as a promising product in the aquaculture sector. Its Emperor Tilapia has established a brand in the domestic market. Seeking to increase the product's value and pursue sustainable development, however, the cooperative has set its sights on exports.

“We have reached an agreement to export tilapia to Japan, with the first shipment expected to be exported in September. In this market, tilapia is not only cooked but also served fresh in dishes such as sushi and sashimi. This demonstrates the quality and safety of our product,” said Le Van Viet, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Xuyen Viet Aquaculture Cooperative.

Building a stringent export process

To meet Japanese standards for tilapia export, Xuyen Viet Aquaculture Cooperative has established a stringent process covering production, preliminary processing and preservation. With a stable source of raw materials, the cooperative transfers technical know-how to farming households and guides them in applying advanced production methods. Particular attention is paid to establishing electronic production logs to facilitate product traceability.

Xuyen Viet Aquaculture Cooperative has also invested in deep processing of fish products.

In 2026, the cooperative's Emperor Tilapia output is expected to reach 500 - 700 tons. To serve export demand, it plans to expand production in the coming years to ensure an annual output of 5,000 - 10,000 tons. The cooperative's preliminary processing and processing plant is equipped with synchronized machinery and a modern production line that meets technical standards. It is also working closely with inspection agencies to complete the procedures and documentation required for export.

According to Vu Thi Kim Hoa, Deputy Head of the Fisheries, Livestock and Veterinary Sub-Department, Xuyen Viet Aquaculture Cooperative's entry into the Japanese market not only creates an opportunity to increase the value of tilapia but also encourages farmers to shift toward more professional, modern and systematic production methods.

Hai Phong has significant potential for aquaculture development. If the city can open the door to demanding markets such as Japan, not only tilapia but also many other local seafood products will have greater opportunities to increase their value and expand their markets.
