High prices
Thanh Ha is a key fruit-growing area of Hai Phong, with kumquat cultivated on more than 150 hectares in concentrated production zones. For more than 30 years, kumquat has become a main local crop alongside lychee, banana and lemon.
Experience in cultivation combined with the application of scientific techniques has helped ensure high yields and quality, particularly in concentrated growing areas such as Trang Liet 1 and Trang Liet 2 hamlets. This year, favorable prices have significantly boosted farmers’ profits.
Tran Van Giai, a farmer in Trang Liet 2 hamlet with more than 1.5 quintals of kumquat orchards, said prices for fresh fruit have reached 30,000 to 33,000 dong per kilogram, roughly three times higher than last year. At this level, profits are estimated at 25 million to 30 million dong per quintal, he said.

Typhoon Yagi, which made landfall in September 2024, damaged some kumquat areas, forcing farmers to replant. This season marks the first harvest for newly planted trees, further adding to farmers’ satisfaction.
Sustainable development orientation
The Thanh Son Agricultural Service Cooperative manages more than 120 hectares of kumquat in Thanh Ha commune. In recent years, it has focused on training farmers in safe production and technical processes, helping trees grow well and maintain stable yields. Some trees planted in 1995–1996 continue to produce fruit.

Tran Trung Linh, director of the cooperative, said the shift to kumquat cultivation has delivered clear economic benefits. With proper techniques, farmers can limit pests and ensure uniform fruit quality.
Annual yields remain stable at 1.3 to 1.7 tons per quintal, sometimes exceeding 1.8 tons. When prices are high, returns can be two to three times higher than other crops.
Vu Thi Hao, vice chairwoman of Thanh Ha commune People’s Committee, said kumquat is one of the locality’s key crops. Authorities are encouraging expansion in suitable areas, strengthening production and consumption linkages, and gradually building stable commodity production zones to support sustainable agricultural development.
