Strategic significance of two “gateways”

Gia Binh is planned to be built to 4E international airport standards. By 2030, the airport will be capable of handling around 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo annually. After 2030, capacity is expected to increase to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo per year. The first international flight is scheduled to land on December 31, 2026.

Located at the heart of Ha Noi – Bac Ninh – Hai Phong triangle, Gia Binh airport is considered a “gateway” for Bac Ninh to connect with major domestic and international economic centers.

Meanwhile, Hai Phong port, particularly Lach Huyen deep-water one, is increasingly asserting its role as the “main gateway” to the sea. The port has become an important link in global shipping routes and an international logistics hub, and is gradually evolving into an international transshipment port.

In May 2025, the first six berths at Lach Huyen were put into operation. Lach Huyen is one of the only two ports in Vietnam, together with Cai Mep – Thi Vai port in Ho Chi Minh city, capable of accommodating the world’s largest container ships and handling direct services to the US East and West coasts, the Americas, and Europe.

Construction of berths 7 and 8 at Lach Huyen is scheduled to begin in 2026. Berths 9 through 12 were granted investment licenses in July with a total investment of nearly 1 billion USD.

With plans to expand to 20 container berths, Lach Huyen port is positioned for significant growth and a stronger role in global supply chains.

Additionally, the Lao Cai – Ha Noi – Hai Phong railway, which will terminate at Lach Huyen, is expected to become a vital transport channel, moving massive cargo volumes from China and northern Vietnam to the port for global export, and vice versa.

Urgent formation of a new corridor

Investment in a transport corridor linking Lach Huyen port with Gia Binh airport has become a critical and urgent priority

Currently, connections between Lach Huyen port and Gia Binh airport rely on National Highways 5 and 38, the Ha Noi – Hai Phong expressway, and provincial roads 390D, 280, and 281. However, both National Highways 5 and 38 are operating at 5 – 6 times their designed capacity, causing frequent congestion. This makes investment in a direct corridor between Lach Huyen and Gia Binh an urgent necessity.

The project will not only improve connectivity between the port, economic zones, industrial parks, and urban areas in Hai Phong and Bac Ninh but also form a new economic corridor, expanding Hai Phong’s development space after merger.

According to Director of the Hai Phong Department of Construction Le Quy Tiep, the need to connect Lach Huyen port with Gia Binh airport is highly urgent and requires swift investment to ensure connection. The department is currently submitting proposals with both short-term and long-term solutions.

In the long run, Hai Phong is considering a corridor along the north of the city, with a proposed route starting from Tan Vu – Lach Huyen interchange – Ring Road 3 – National Highway 10 – a newly built link to Provincial Road 352, crossing the Han Cam river, connecting to Kenh Vang bridge, and ending at Gia Binh airport. The total length of this corridor would be approximately 74.3 km.

This northern corridor is expected to open a new economic development axis, attract investment, promote industry and services, shorten travel distances, enhance trade opportunities, and create momentum for a comprehensive transformation of the local economy and society, ultimately improving living standards for residents.
