The introduction of Starlink satellite internet on Bach Long Vi Island in Hai Phong is helping improve connectivity and accelerate digital transformation.

On November 1, the Bach Long Vi Special Zone People's Committee, in coordination with the Hai Phong Department of Science and Technology, held an acceptance and handover ceremony for the Starlink low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet system, officially putting it into operation after nearly two weeks of trial operation.
At the Special Zone's Public Service Center, officials and staff have been using the new connection for their daily work since the system was installed and activated. Faster internet speeds have made information exchange, document processing and access to online platforms more convenient.
The Starlink system has been installed at four locations: the headquarters of the Special Zone Party Committee, the Special Zone People's Committee headquarters, the auditorium of the Public Service Center, and the square and entrance gate area of the Special Zone Center.

During the trial period, internet speeds at the installation sites ranged from 300 Mbps to over 400 Mbps, depending on location and testing time. Wi-Fi coverage extended 35–50 meters from the equipment. Notably, on October 27 and 28, when Bach Long Vi was affected by strong northeasterly winds at levels 7–8, accompanied by light showers, the system remained stable without interruption, maintaining average speeds of 300–350 Mbps.
As a remote island frequently exposed to storms, strong winds and adverse weather conditions, maintaining reliable connectivity is essential for Bach Long Vi. In addition to supporting the operations of local authorities and agencies, internet access enables residents to stay in touch with the mainland, receive up-to-date information and maintain business and service activities.

For an island with a large fishing community and numerous vessels operating at sea, such as Bach Long Vi, stable internet connectivity also supports vessel management, information exchange among relevant forces, disaster prevention and search and rescue operations.
Adding satellite connectivity helps maintain communications during adverse weather conditions while creating favorable conditions for the locality to expand the use of information technology and accelerate digital transformation in public administration and management. It also helps residents and businesses gain better access to digital services.
Bui Trung Tien, Secretary of the Party Committee of Bach Long Vi Special Zone, said the installation of the Starlink satellite internet system was highly practical for local operations, helping improve the effectiveness of leadership, direction and administration while supporting socioeconomic development tasks.
Starting with four connection points, Starlink is opening up greater access to high-quality telecommunications services for officials and residents on Bach Long Vi Island. This represents an additional step in strengthening digital infrastructure in the island area, helping narrow the connectivity gap with the mainland and supporting socioeconomic development alongside national defense, security and the protection of the country's maritime sovereignty.
