Whether studying, working, or settling far away from home, Hai Phong expatriates always turn their hearts toward the homeland on every National Day.
Flame of patriotism
Born and raised in Hai Phong, Duong Dieu Huong carried with her the love for her hometown and the aspiration to learn and contribute when she went abroad to study. She is now a doctoral researcher in journalism at a prestigious university in Moscow (Russia), after completing her master’s program with outstanding results.
In addition to her research, Dieu Huong actively participates in community activities organized by the Vietnamese Association in Russia. For her, National Day (September 2) is not only a holiday but also a special occasion to relive the Vietnamese nation’s heroic spirit, rekindling her motivation for study and research so that one day she can return to contribute to the country’s journalism and communications sector.
“Living far from home, I deeply appreciate the happiness of being born in a sovereign nation. Every September 2, I think of my ancestors and of Hai Phong – the resilient city that nurtured me. That is also the driving force that keeps me steadfast on my path of study abroad,” said Huong.
Chu Quang Nghia, a Hai Phong expatriate living and working in Melbourne (Australia), shares the same feelings of attachment to the homeland on National Day. Having lived in Australia for years, Nghia has been active in the Vietnamese Association in Melbourne, especially in programs connecting young Vietnamese generations with national culture and history.
“National Day is an occasion for us to remind our descendants about their roots and the value of independence and freedom. My friends and I often hold gatherings, hang the national flag, and tell our descendants stories about the historic September 2, 1945,” said Nghia.

To Nghia, Hai Phong is always a source of pride. He said that every time he returns home and sees new bridges and bustling urban areas rising, he feels even more confident about the city’s future development.
Faith entrusted to the homeland
Both Duong Dieu Huong and Chu Quang Nghia share something in common: despite being far away, they always follow the country’s every step forward, taking pride in Vietnam’s growing position in the region and the world.
These expatriates not only preserve the Vietnamese language and culture in their daily lives but also actively contribute to the local communities abroad, becoming bridges of cultural and intellectual exchange. They are vivid proof of the Party and State’s consistent policy of considering overseas Vietnamese as an inseparable part and an important resource for national development.
Every September 2, Vietnamese communities across the globe organize diverse activities, including solemn ceremonies, art performances, photo exhibitions, or simply family meals with the red national flag displayed in the most honored place. These are living proofs of an undying love for the homeland. Patriotism is the flame that drives them to keep striving, with the hope of one day returning to contribute to building a prosperous homeland.
