Inspections drive fire safety upgrades

During a recent survey on fire prevention, firefighting and rescue conducted by the Legal Affairs Committee of the Hai Phong People's Council, building operators said ensuring the long-term effectiveness of fire protection systems was as important as investing in technical infrastructure.

At the HH3-HH4 Dong Quoc Binh apartment buildings, which has 1,456 apartments, fire safety measures are maintained through regular training and periodic firefighting and rescue drills, supported by on-site response teams.

According to Hai Phong Housing Management and Trading One Member Co. Ltd., several components of the building's fire protection system were damaged by Typhoon Yagi in 2024 and require repairs and upgrades. The shortcomings were noted for repairs during a recent inspection by the Legal Affairs Committee.

Nguyen Duc Hoa, Deputy General Director of the company, said the operator regularly works with relevant agencies to inspect technical systems and review firefighting equipment, while continuing to push for repairs and upgrades.

Experience from apartment buildings shows that even modern fire protection systems require regular maintenance. Their effectiveness depends on regular maintenance and prompt repairs.

Awareness seen as key to fire prevention

Apartment and high-rise developments have expanded rapidly across the city in recent years as urbanization gathers pace. Their integrated infrastructure, extensive amenities and convenient access have made apartment buildings increasingly popular, particularly among young families.

In fact, incidents in high-rise buildings can affect a large number of households. As a result, maintaining fire protection systems and raising residents' awareness are regarded as key elements of fire prevention.

Building operators say many fire hazards stem from everyday practices, including improper use of electricity, blocked emergency exits and inadequate emergency response skills. The growing use of electric motorcycles, electric bicycles and devices powered by lithium batteries has also heightened concerns over fires linked to charging.

The survey team from the Legal Affairs Committee of the Hai Phong People's Council urged building operators to step up awareness efforts and educate residents on the safe use and charging of electric vehicles. It also called for regular checks of corridors, emergency staircases and common areas to reduce potential safety risks.

Following the survey, Pham Quoc Ka, member of the city Party Committee and Head of the Legal Affairs Committee, commended building operators for their efforts to improve facilities, strengthen on-site response teams and implement fire prevention measures.

He called on the units to continue addressing shortcomings, step up maintenance of firefighting systems and equipment, raise residents' awareness and emergency response skills, and pay closer attention to risks associated with electricity use and the charging of electric vehicles at apartment buildings.
