The 55th International UPU Letter Writing Competition in 2026 has the theme: “Write a letter to a friend explaining why human-to-human connection is essential in the digital world.”

On January 27, at Hong Bang Secondary School, the Department of Science and Technology, in coordination with the Department of Education and Training, the Hai Phong Youth Union, and the city’s Post Office, organized a ceremony to respond to and launch the 55th International UPU Letter Writing Competition (2026) across Hai Phong City.
This year’s competition carries the theme: “Write a letter to a friend explaining why human-to-human connection is essential in the digital world.”
The theme is considered highly topical, reflecting the relationship between humans and technology in the digital era, and emphasizing the value of sincere connection, understanding, and empathy among people.
The organizing committee called on schools throughout the city to continue strengthening communication efforts, providing guidance, and encouraging students to actively participate in the competition; to motivate them to foster creativity and express their thoughts and emotions through clear, humane, and meaningful language. Through this, the competition contributes to maintaining and promoting the tradition of academic excellence and the outstanding achievements of Hai Phong students in this international intellectual arena.
At the launching conference, a representative of the Information and Communication Technology Center (Department of Science and Technology) shared insights and provided guidance on safe use of cyberspace and the protection of children in the digital environment.
The International UPU Letter Writing Competition was initiated in 1971 by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in cooperation with UNESCO, with the aim of developing children’s writing skills and creative thinking, contributing to character building, raising civic awareness, and strengthening friendship among young people of different countries.
Over the years, the competition has become an activity of profound educational and humanitarian significance, attracting wide participation from students around the world.
Viet Nam is one of the countries that has actively embraced the competition. Hai Phong (including the former Hai Phong and Hai Duong) has for many consecutive years been among the leading localities nationwide in both the quantity and quality of submitted entries.
The city has won two international prizes, including one first prize awarded to Nguyen Thi Thu Trang, a student of Nguyen Trai Secondary School (Nam Sach), in 2016.
