School healthcare in Hai Phong is evolving beyond routine medical services, with growing emphasis on both the physical and mental well-being of the city's more than one million students.
At the end of the 2025-2026 school year, Quang Trung Primary School in Kien An Ward worked with Hai Phong Children's Hospital to provide annual health screenings for all students. According to Principal Nguyen Thi Lan, the screenings help identify health conditions early for timely treatment while encouraging students to develop healthy habits from an early age.
Schools are also placing greater emphasis on health education and life skills. At Pham Su Manh Secondary School in Kinh Mon Ward, routine health check-ups are complemented by lessons on disease prevention, fire safety, rescue skills and accident prevention.
According to the Hai Phong Department of Education and Training, the city has implemented the School Health Program 2021-2025 and the School Healthcare Program for Preschool and General Education Institutions Linked with Primary Healthcare 2021-2025, helping improve the quality of student healthcare.
Health education has also become a routine part of school life. All educational institutions comply with regulations on disease prevention and control, food safety, injury prevention and personal hygiene, while students' health records are managed through digital software.
More than 90% of schools have established school counselling teams, up 12% from the previous academic year. Many have assigned teachers to provide counselling and organized sessions on reproductive health, gender education, school psychology and online safety. The changes underscore a broader shift in school healthcare, from focusing primarily on physical health to giving greater attention to students' mental well-being.
Despite the progress, school healthcare in Hai Phong continues to face challenges. According to the Department of Education and Training, funding remains limited and relies largely on the student health insurance fund.
To further improve student healthcare, the prime minister approved the School Health Program for 2026-2035 on June 1, 2026, replacing the previous program covering 2021-2025.
The program sets eight targets for 2030, including ensuring that all educational institutions monitor and assess students' nutritional status; all schools provide education on healthcare, nutrition and mental health; and all students receive at least one annual health check-up or health screening, with records updated in their electronic health records.
According to Do Duy Hung, Deputy Director of the Hai Phong Department of Education and Training, the city has 1,608 educational institutions serving more than one million students. To implement the program, the department will strengthen curriculum content on nutrition, physical activity, mental health, disease prevention, school-related health conditions and first-aid skills. It also plans to promote safe schools, health-promoting schools and student-friendly school health services.
The department will further expand the use of digital technology in student health management, strengthen inter-agency inspections and mobilize additional social resources to support school healthcare as Hai Phong works toward a more comprehensive model of student well-being.
