The Prime Minister has approved a project to turn Vietnam Maritime University into a leading institution in the region and the world.
On September 5, the Prime Minister approved a project to turn Vietnam Maritime University into a national key university for training and research in support of sustainable marine economic development, with goals set to 2030 and a vision to 2045.
The general target is to develop Vietnam Maritime University into a center of high quality education, scientific research, innovation, technology transfer and application, and pilot production.
In the fields of transport and marine economy, the university is expected to reach regional and international levels and become one of Asia’s top institutions for training high-quality human resources in maritime, marine economy, and ocean studies.
Specifically, by 2030, the university will expand enrollment to 26,000 – 28,000 students, with graduate students accounting for about 7.5% of total enrollment, and more than 150 international students, and focus on priority fields such as maritime science, mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, automation and control, marine economy and logistics, offshore engineering, and marine environment.
The university will also develop a high-quality teaching staff, with over 50% holding doctoral degrees and more than 15% holding professorship or associate professorship titles.
Each year, it aims to carry out at least five national-level science and technology projects, along with 20 ministerial-level or equivalent projects, striving to become one of the top five centers in ASEAN for maritime and marine economy human resource training. Programs in maritime science and mechanical engineering are expected to rank among the top 10 in Asia.
By 2035, the university targets 28,000 – 30,000 students, with graduate students making up 10% of the total, and over 200 international students. Priority disciplines will expand to include remote sensing and marine navigation, and advanced materials, alongside the existing core areas.
Looking ahead to 2045, the university aims to continuously improve quality, make breakthroughs in high-level human resource training, scientific research, innovation, and technology transfer to meet the requirements of sustainable marine and ocean economic development.
It will also contribute to promoting socio-economic growth and ensuring national defense and security in the Red River Delta region and across the country, strive to reach the level of leading maritime universities in developed countries in the Asia-Pacific region and globally…
