Phung Phap Communal House in Gia Vien Ward (Hai Phong City) is a 300-year-old architectural and artistic heritage site that still preserves numerous precious artifacts.

Amidst today's busy urban life, Phung Phap Communal House, also known as Trung Communal House and formally named Khanh Tho, retains the ancient beauty of a structure with over three centuries of history.
According to local elders, the communal house was initially built of bamboo in Trai hamlet, then relocated to Trung hamlet, and gradually reconstructed with wood during the Nguyen Dynasty. As Phung Phap village expanded into the North and South hamlets, each developed its own communal house; however, Khanh Tho remains the central sanctuary for the community's major religious activities.
The central figure worshipped at the communal house is King Ngo Quyen, who led the local people in defeating the Nam Han army (Chinese invaders) in the battle on the historic Bach Dang river in 938, ending more than 1,000 years of Chinese occupation, and which opened up an era of long-term autonomy. In the local consciousness, King Ngo Quyen is not only a national hero but also a sacred guardian deity, who protects the peace of the region.
Phung Phap Communal House preserves many precious artifacts
Beyond its architectural significance, the communal house holds a rich collection of artifacts that reflect local history and religious life. Currently, the commune house preserves royal edicts from the Nguyen Dynasty, a collection of stone steles,including those dating back to the Canh Hung era, alongside worship statues, spirit tablets, palanquins, and various ancient documents.
These artifacts serve as tangible evidence of the commune house's history and restoration efforts, acting as vital historical resources for local research.
Phung Phap Communal House serves as a vital center for local cultural activities. Every year, from the Lunar January 17th to the 19th, the communal house hosts a festival featuring solemn rituals and traditional folk activities such as human chess, cockfighting, and Cheo singing. This occasion allows the community to honor their ancestors while preserving enduring traditional cultural values.
