Hai Phong currently has nearly 55,000 active businesses. In the first nine months of 2026, an estimated 5,759 new businesses were established in the city, up 2.6% year on year. During the same period, GRDP grew by 12.08%, while foreign investment exceeded USD 3.6 billion.

The city’s economy continues to expand, creating more opportunities for production and business. For long-term development, the city needs more domestic enterprises capable of making large investments, building brands and participating more deeply in international markets.

The city’s strengths in industry, seaports and transport, together with the presence of many major corporations, provide favorable conditions for achieving this goal. However, how much local businesses can capitalize on these advantages depends on their technological capabilities, management expertise and ability to form partnerships.

According to the Hai Phong Business Association, many domestic manufacturers still use outdated machinery and processes, are slow to innovate and face high production costs, making it difficult to compete with imported goods. To enter overseas markets, businesses must also meet additional requirements related to green standards, carbon emissions, traceability and rules of origin. These limitations directly affect their ability to develop products, expand markets and build brands.

Meanwhile, resources for innovation remain under considerable pressure. Businesses need to invest to become more competitive but struggle to accumulate sufficient capital for investment. Unless these obstacles are addressed, efforts to improve capabilities will be difficult to translate into changes in production.

Therefore, business support should be linked to specific development plans. At the same time, it is necessary to promote partnerships in sectors where Hai Phong has advantages, such as seaports, logistics, mechanical engineering and supporting industries. The City Business Association has identified these as priority areas for building connections.

To develop more large enterprises, the city also needs to pay due attention to the investment expansion needs of existing businesses. Expanding a factory or upgrading a production line can help increase manufacturing capacity. Promptly resolving administrative procedures, publicizing planning information and ensuring fair access to resources will enable businesses to become more proactive.

At a meeting with businesses to hear their concerns on October 13, Secretary of the Hai Phong Party Committee Le Ngoc Chau emphasized: “For matters within the authorities’ responsibility, the city must take decisive action to resolve them; for matters within businesses’ responsibility, businesses must also proactively innovate and strive to move forward.” For businesses, innovation must be reflected in management, production organization, capital use, and workforce development. Building a brand requires sustained investment in product and service quality and customer trust. Hai Phong entrepreneurs, both inside and outside the city, can contribute through investment partnerships, experience sharing and market connections.

By 2030, Hai Phong aims to have 87,000 businesses, including at least three large enterprises participating in global value chains. Alongside increasing the number of businesses, the city needs to focus on strengthening the capabilities of existing enterprises. More than 100 years of industrial development is a source of pride, as well as a reason to expect more from Hai Phong’s products and brands. Having more businesses capable of competing and growing sustainably will help strengthen the city’s economic strength.
