Pilot models of night-time economic activities in Hai Phong city, such as art performances, cultural tours, night markets, and pedestrian streets, have begun to prove their appeal, revealing significant potential for stronger development in the near future.
New experiences
Among the most notable night tourism models recently introduced in Hai Phong is Symphony of the Green Island, developed by SunGroup in cooperation with H2O Events and Laser Vision, on Cat Ba island with an investment of nearly 200 billion VND.
The show gathered world-class extreme sports athletes, and its debut night attracted thousands of spectators to the central square and beach.
In addition, the VUI-Fest Bazaar night market, along with a chain of restaurants, pubs, and electric car tours of the town center, offer visitors more entertainment and dining options.
“In the past, coming to Cat Ba was mainly about swimming and visiting the bay. Now, with more night activities, the trip feels much more memorable. The evenings are no longer boring but instead vibrant and modern,” said Nguyen Thu Trang, a tourist from Ha Noi.
Alongside Cat Ba, the cultural night tour “Sacred Traces of Hang Kenh” was officially launched in June. The highlight of the tour is a 3D Mapping performance that recreates the nation’s heroic struggle against foreign invaders, associated with the Bach Dang victory of 938. Light, sound, and motion effects projected onto the ancient communal house create a vivid, emotional space.
After the show, visitors can explore the communal house, listen to explanations about its history, discover intangible cultural heritage such as ca tru singing and water puppetry, and light incense in memory of national hero Ngo Quyen.
According to the city Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the city’s night tourism models have developed strongly, attracting large numbers of locals and visitors to enjoy cultural activities, art performances, and cuisine. As a result, in the first seven months of 2025, Hai Phong welcomed 9.37 million visitors, up 29.78% year-on-year, including 660,370 international visitors, up 7.33%.
Completing policies and infrastructure for breakthroughs
Despite a few recent projects drawing attention from locals and tourists, overall, Hai Phong’s night-time economy has yet to develop in proportion to its potential.
In this context, the Hai Phong Night Square project, jointly developed by TD Group and Champton Hospitality Group, broke ground on August 16 and is expected to create a breakthrough. With a total investment of over 700 billion VND, the project covers nearly 2 ha at the Vo Nguyen Giap – Mai Nang intersection in An Bien ward. It includes three high-rise buildings for offices, rental apartments, and a 4-star hotel, more than 20 commercial shophouses, and a modern square with a musical fountain and an outdoor stage.
Night Square will operate under the “night-time economy” model, from evening until dawn, offering a full range of services including Asian and European cuisine, cafés, lounges, bars, karaoke, shopping, and art performances.
According to Nguyen Van Luan, Chairman and General Director of TD Group, Night Square will give Hai Phong a bustling nightlife hub comparable to Ta Hien Street (Ha Noi), Bui Vien Street (Ho Chi Minh city), Shibuya (Tokyo, Japan), or Itaewon (Seoul, South Korea), becoming a fresh and attractive destination for tourists.
In the coming time, to further promote night tourism, the city Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism plans to review and improve policies, creating a unified legal framework for night tourism development. This will focus on regulations regarding types of business, designated business areas, restricted zones, and especially operating hours, from 10 pm to 6 am, to provide favorable conditions.
The department will also incorporate night tourism into the city’s overall socio-economic development plan, clearly designating areas and routes for development such as the city center, Do Son, Cat Ba, and Vu Yen. It will outline priority night-time services and introduce supportive policies and incentives to attract investors, enterprises, and local communities to participate.
Additionally, a zoning plan will be developed for night tourism models, including streets specializing in services like shopping, cafés, bars, pubs, karaoke, and dance clubs; food streets, squares, and parks for entertainment, while encouraging 24/7 convenience store chains. These areas will be designed as separate zones to limit the impact of lighting and noise.
