In 1874, a trade treaty signed between the Nguyen dynasty and the French colonialists officially opened Hai Phong’s seaway, laying the foundation for the formation of the largest seaport city in Northern Vietnam.

During the resistance war against the US aggressors, Hai Phong Port became the “lifeline” for the frontline. Nearly 40 million tons of aid goods from the Soviet Union and other socialist countries passed through here.

After national reunification, Hai Phong Port continued to serve as the gateway for trade in the North. In 2018, Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal (TC-HICT) at Lach Huyen wharf officially came into operation. This was the first deep-water port in the North and ranked among the world’s top 20 container ports, capable of accommodating ships of over 132,000 tons and 12,000 TEU, sailing directly to Europe and the US without transshipment. This was a remarkable breakthrough, enabling Hai Phong to reach further out to the sea.

To Northern logistics hub

In June 2025, the National Assembly adopted Resolution 226/2025/QH15 on piloting several special mechanisms and policies for the development of Hai Phong. Six groups of mechanisms with 41 policies, including key policies to remove administrative bottlenecks in attracting seaport investment, provide momentum for Hai Phong to maximize its potential and advantages, create a breakthrough development model, and contribute to boosting the economy of the Northern coastal region and the whole country.

According to the master plan for the development of Hai Phong seaport land and water areas for 2021–2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Ministry of Construction in June 2025, by 2030, Hai Phong’s seaport system will be able to handle between 175.4 – 215.5 million tons of cargo and 20.4 – 22.8 thousand passenger arrivals.

Specifically, Lach Huyen wharf will have 14 – 16 terminals with 15 – 18 berths, in which wharves No. 1 – 4 will accommodate ships up to 165,000 tons (12,000 TEU), and wharves No. 5 – 10 will handle ships up to 200,000 tons (18,000 TEU), in line with related infrastructure.

In addition, Lach Huyen wharf is also planned for general cargo terminals and liquid/gas terminals. Along with Lach Huyen, the city will also have the Nam Do Son wharf, terminals at Dinh Vu and Van Uc wharves to serve the relocation of wharves along the Cam river.

Alongside infrastructure investment, the city’s seaports are also strengthening international cooperation. In June 2025, Hai Phong Port signed a memorandum of cooperation with Klaipeda Port (Lithuania), opening a direct connection to Europe. In August 2025, the port welcomed a delegation from Zhoushan Ningbo Port (China) to foster cooperation in services, warehousing, and logistics. These activities not only enhanced the position of Hai Phong ports but also contributed to turning the city into an important international transit hub on the global maritime map.

80 years after the national independence, Hai Phong Port not only remains the largest trade gateway in the North but also stands as a testament to the perseverance, creativity, and aspiration for integration of Hai Phong’s people on their journey to the open sea.

In the past seven months, the volume of cargo through Hai Phong seaports reached 65.5 million tons, up 7% compared to the same period in 2024. Of this, cargo handled by seagoing vessels reached 55.5 million tons, while inland waterway vessels handled 10 million tons. Hai Phong received up to 10,481 ship calls, up 10%.
