After years of struggling through a crisis, shipbuilding enterprises in Hai Phong have entered a new phase of recovery and development.
Brighter picture
Hai Phong, known as the cradle of Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry, boasts a tradition spanning more than a century.
In the early 2000s, the city was home to over 40 shipbuilding facilities, making it the country's largest center for shipbuilding and repair. Major names included Nam Trieu, Pha Rung, Bach Dang, Tam Bac, Ben Kien, and Song Cam shipyards.
At its peak, the industry employed tens of thousands of workers and engineers, with enterprises capable of building vessels of over 53,000 tons for export to foreign partners.
A "fresh breeze" has recently revitalized the shipbuilding sector as the global maritime industry embarks on a transition toward clean-fuel vessels, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.
A surge of orders has flooded Hai Phong’s shipbuilders. For instance, in January 2025, Pacific Shipbuilding JSC. signed contracts and began the construction of eight unrestricted international vessels, with a total investment exceeding 2.6 trillion VND. Meanwhile, Pha Rung Shipyard Co., Ltd. signed a deal to build ten 13,000-DWT oil/chemical tankers for a South Korean shipowner…
To date, most shipbuilding enterprises in Hai Phong have secured enough orders to stay busy through 2028, with some booked up to 2030, offering workers competitive salaries.
Seizing opportunities for breakthroughs
In 2024, Damen Song Cam Shipyard reached its full annual capacity of 40 vessels. Seeing the shipbuilding industry's golden recovery period, General Director Joris Van Tienen shared that the company is now studying and investing in the construction of a new plant, aiming to double its capacity to 80 vessels per year.
The company hopes that the city and local authorities will support land allocation for the new facility, and pay greater attention to training institutions to attract more students into shipbuilding-related fields to meet the sector’s rising recruitment demand.
Speaking at the recent steel-cutting ceremony for the construction of three 14,000-m3 chemical tankers organized by Bach Dang Shipyard Co., Ltd., Pham Hoai Chung, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (SBIC), stated that from now to 2028, the global shipbuilding market is expected to grow by an additional 22.1 billion USD and reach a total of 195 billion USD by 2030, with an average annual growth rate of nearly 4%.
Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry is facing new opportunities amid global shifts in the sector. Enterprises in Hai Phong are moving quickly to capitalize on this momentum, overcoming difficulties to usher in a new era of prosperity for shipbuilding.
