Hai Phong speeds up construction of key highway interchange

Overcoming difficulties, ensuring safety

Amid the busy traffic on national highway 5, the interchange connecting national highway 17B with national highway 5 and the Ha Noi–Hai Phong railway in Phu Thai commune is gradually taking shape. In late October 2025, more than 40 pieces of machinery and construction equipment operated continuously at the site.

The large, bustling site is divided into 12 simultaneous work fronts, with around 350 engineers and workers working in three shifts around the clock. With urgency and determination, the construction units are striving to bring the project to completion ahead of schedule.

According to Nguyen Nam Tung, Chief Commander of the site, the project runs through national highway 5, a vital route linking Ha Noi and Hai Phong with a high density of vehicles, especially container trucks and heavy-duty vehicles. Ensuring both progress and traffic safety throughout construction has been a major challenge for the construction units.

To minimize disruptions to traffic, the contractors are executing the work in stages. When weather conditions are favorable, maximum manpower is mobilized, operating in three shifts to make up for any schedule delays.

Nguyen Phuc Hai, Executive Director of the project under Phuong Thanh Transport Construction and Investment JSC., said that during construction, the contractor closely coordinates with relevant agencies to manage traffic flow, install guide signs, and assign personnel to regulate traffic at potential congestion points.

Removing bottlenecks, opening path for development

The project to construct the interchange connecting national highway 17B with national highway 5 and the Ha Noi–Hai Phong railway is invested by the West Hai Phong Construction Investment Project Management Unit. The main interchange is a grade-1 structure designed as a grade-separated roundabout interchange, consisting of a main bridge and eight ramps, with a width of 19 m. The main approach road is over 1 km long and 24 – 40 m wide. The frontage road is a class-4 delta road, more than 1.3 km long and 8 m wide. The total investment capital is 1.867 trillion VND.

Construction will last from December 5, 2024 to December 24, 2025 as contracted.

Once completed, the interchange will help ease traffic congestion and reduce accidents on national highway 5, while gradually completing the transportation corridor connecting the Ha Noi–Hai Phong expressway with national highway 18.

The project also plays a vital role in improving the transport infrastructure of the former Kim Thanh district and Kinh Mon town, and the western Hai Phong region. It will also further support urban expansion and boost socio-economic development in the region.
