Hospitals in Hai Phong are increasingly bringing in leading specialists from Vietnam's top hospitals, allowing patients to receive advanced treatment closer to home while strengthening the expertise of local medical staff.
The initiative has been adopted by a growing number of healthcare facilities, where visiting specialists provide outpatient consultations, assist with complex cases and share expertise with local doctors.
Hai Duong Tropical Diseases Hospital launched the program after signing a comprehensive cooperation agreement with National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in October 2024. Since November that year, the hospital has held specialist clinics on the last Sunday of every month.
The visiting physicians specialize in liver and biliary diseases, viral hepatitis, parasitic infections and other infectious diseases. They also join multidisciplinary consultations, recommend advanced treatment options and support local doctors in managing complicated cases.
Tang Van Nam, Deputy Director of Hai Duong Tropical Diseases Hospital, said the program enables patients to access specialist care without travelling to central hospitals, while giving local doctors hands-on opportunities to learn from leading experts and keep pace with advances in clinical practice.
Hai Phong - Vinh Bao International General Hospital has also made specialist clinics a regular part of its services. Combined with investments in MRI, CT, endoscopy, ultrasound and laboratory facilities, the hospital has expanded its capacity to provide specialized diagnosis and treatment locally.
Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, the city's largest public hospital, also continues to invite specialists from Hanoi. This month, experts from Bach Mai Hospital and E Hospital are providing weekend clinics in cardiology, endocrinology and musculoskeletal medicine.
The growing use of visiting specialists reflects a broader effort by hospitals to expand access to specialized local healthcare local, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment at central hospitals.
