Electronic medical records are becoming the ‘key’ to unlocking smart, transparent healthcare, saving time for both doctors and patients.

Several hospitals in Hai Phong city, such as Viet Tiep Friendship, Kien An, Hai Phong Psychiatric, Hai Phong Eye, and Hai Phong Obstetrics and Gynecology, have applied or are in the process of applying electronic medical records.

“Electronic medical records are not only a trend but also an inevitable requirement to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment. Their implementation helps doctors closely monitor patients’ conditions, maximizes support for treatment, and enables data connectivity between different levels of care,” said Dr. Le Quang Duc, Deputy Director of Hai Duong General Hospital.

Electronic medical records are just one component of the healthcare sector’s digital transformation strategy, aiming for a smart, connected, and transparent healthcare ecosystem. In the future, the entire examination and treatment process will be carried out in a digital environment, from registration, testing, diagnostics, and issuance of treatment orders to payment of hospital fees.

MSc Nguyen Viet Anh, Head of the Information Technology Department at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, noted: “The success of digital transformation depends largely on human factors. Hospitals need clear implementation roadmaps, proper investment in digital infrastructure, and changes in the management mindset and service approach of their staff.”

In practice, smart healthcare is not only about technology but also about putting “patients at the center” and moving towards personalized care. According to Dr. Pham Van Dien, Specialist Level II and Director of Hai Duong Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, to work towards a smart hospital model, the hospital has proactively invested in information technology infrastructure, upgraded its management systems for medical examination and treatment, and standardized professional procedures.

Beyond software upgrades and applications, the hospital has also invited experts from the Ministry of Science and Technology to provide direct guidance and training for its staff. This step-by-step process creates a solid foundation for implementing electronic medical records methodically, safely, and effectively.

To build a smart healthcare system and proactively enter the digital era, the health sector needs flexible management policies and stronger public–private cooperation in investing in software systems, data, and information security.

Director of the Hai Phong Department of Health Le Minh Quang is urgently directing medical facilities in the city to complete the application of electronic medical records by September 30, 2025, in line with the Ministry of Health’s schedule.
