At first, Phu Xa was only a small thatch-and-bamboo shrine; it was restored during Tu Duc's reign (1848–1883). After several renovations and restorations, Phu Xa Temple today is an impressive and large-scale structure.
The carved and painted decorative motifs reflect the late 19th–early 20th century Nguyen artistic style. Notably, the temple preserves statues, artifacts, and ceramics of high artistic and sculptural value dating from the 17th–19th centuries.
Among the artifacts kept at the temple, a standout is a 1.25 m bronze statue of Tran Hung Dao, cast as a single piece and depicted standing with a sword, believed to have been made in the late 19th century.
Because of its great historical, cultural, and architectural values, Phu Xa Temple was listed as a national relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 1988. The ancient temple, together with many other relics in Dong Hai ward such as Phu Thuong Doan palace, Phuong Luu communal house, Phuong Luu shrine, and Ve Pagoda, forms a complex that attracts many residents and visitors.
