The travel market is seeing a clear shift towards short trips, with demand moving to nearby destinations and more flexible itineraries, as rising transport costs reshape tourist behavior.

Travel trend shifts

In the context of higher travel expenses, particularly airfares, many travelers are opting for shorter journeys instead of longer holidays as in the past.

At the Vietnam International Travel Mart (VITM) 2026, many travel firms said extending public holidays is no longer a decisive factor in stimulating demand.

Current demand is not solely dependent on the number of days off, but is closely tied to costs and travel accessibility.

Nguyen Cong Hoan, General Director of Flamingo Redtours and head of the Communications and Digital Transformation Committee of the Vietnam Tourism Association, said holiday duration remains an important factor, but schedules should be announced early to allow people to plan, especially for long-haul trips involving visas and financial arrangements.

He said swapping holiday schedules around the Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day and the April 30–May 1 holiday is no longer necessary, as high travel costs are prompting tourists to favor nearby destinations.

The current holiday schedule is considered consistent with market trends.

In practice, as transport costs rise, particularly for air travel, tourists are shifting to alternatives such as private cars or trains.

Nearby destinations have become the preferred choice, offering lower costs and better suitability for shorter holidays.

More flexible tourism products

In response to changing demand, travel companies are adjusting their products to better match market needs.

At VITM 2026, a range of promotions has been launched to stimulate demand amid volatile transport costs.

Pham Van Bay, Director of Vietravel’s Northern Retail Center, said the company had proactively secured air tickets and services early, enabling it to offer competitively priced packages.

Many flight-and-hotel combos, as well as package tours to destinations such as the northwest and northeast regions, Ha Long, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Phu Quoc and the Mekong Delta, are being offered with discounts of up to 30%.

For international travel, discounts can reach up to 10 million dong, covering routes to Asia, Europe, Australia and the United States.

In some cases, outbound tours are even more competitively priced than domestic ones due to differences in operating costs.

Nguyen Cong Hoan added that during the April 30 holiday, tourists continue to prioritize nearby destinations and flexible transport options.

Travel firms are focusing on developing small-group domestic products at destinations such as Cat Ba in Hai Phong, Hai Tien in Thanh Hoa, Dai Lai in Phu Tho, Tan Trao in Tuyen Quang and Nui Coc Lake in Thai Nguyen.

At the same time, rail-based tourism products to central Vietnam are also being promoted as a new travel experience.
