The Prime Minister has just issued a Decision on the set of criteria and the evaluation and classification procedure for products under the OCOP program.

Under the Decision, OCOP products are specialty items that showcase local identity, produced to standards that connect with traditional cultural values, ensure food safety, protect the environment and fulfill social responsibilities, with a focus on green and sustainable development.

The Decision sets out an evaluation and classification framework of three criterion groups with a maximum total score of 100 points. The product and community strength criteria account for 40 points; marketing capability accounts for 25 points; and product quality accounts for 35 points.

Based on evaluation results, OCOP products are classified into five tiers, from 1-star to 5-star.

In the tourism sector, continuing to include community-based tourism services, ecotourism and tourist destinations in the OCOP classification system is expected to provide a basis for local authorities to effectively take advantages of rural tourism resources, promote traditional cultural values, craft villages, landscapes and local products.

Accordingly, localities will have greater opportunities to diversify tourism products, improve residents' incomes, create sustainable livelihoods and contribute to advancing the new rural development program.
