Racing toward the finish line

These days, construction crews at the Cat Bi International Airport Cargo Terminal project are mobilizing manpower and equipment to complete the final works. Current activities are focused mainly on the technical building, connecting roads, and several auxiliary facilities.

According to Do Ngoc Minh, member of the Project Management Team, by early August, the terminal building, connecting roads, and parking area had been largely completed, bringing the overall project to approximately 98% completion. Contractors are now working to finalize the remaining items with the goal of handing over the project later this month.

The main terminal is now substantially complete. Cargo-handling equipment, X-ray screening machines, weighing equipment, and fire prevention and firefighting systems, have been installed. The project is transitioning from construction to completion, technical inspection and operational readiness.

Developed by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the Cat Bi International Airport Cargo Terminal project broke ground in November 2024 with a total investment of VND 724 billion. The facility has a designed capacity of 100,000 tons of cargo per year, with integrated technical infrastructure that allows future expansion to 250,000 tons annually.

A new logistics link

The cargo terminal is being built in the context of rapidly growing demand for air freight in Hai Phong and the northern coastal region. The city is home to a strong industrial base and numerous foreign-invested manufacturers, particularly in electronics and high-tech industries, where fast and secure air cargo transport is essential.

The new terminal will become another link in Hai Phong's logistics network.

Cat Bi Airport's strategic advantage lies in its proximity to the seaport system and industrial parks, as well as its connections to road, inland waterway, and railway networks. Once operational, the cargo terminal will strengthen links between air transport, seaports, and other modes of transportation, supporting the development of a more efficient multimodal transport network.

Under the Hai Phong Master Plan for the 2021 – 2030 period with a vision to 2050, Cat Bi International Airport is targeted to handle approximately 13 million passengers and 250,000 tons of cargo annually by 2030 and 18 million passengers and 500,000 tons of cargo per year by 2050.

Within this development roadmap, the new cargo terminal, together with the T2 passenger terminal and the aircraft apron expansion project, will enhance Cat Bi International Airport's operational capacity and strengthen connectivity between aviation, seaports, industrial parks, and other transport modes.
