The Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival – VTV 2026 will reinstate its two-round competition format, with 32 fighting buffaloes participating in the preliminary round.

On June 17, the Organizing Committee of the Do Son Traditional Buffalo Fighting Festival – VTV 2026 announced details of the festival’s upcoming activities.
The festival consists of two main parts. The ceremonial section features solemn rituals that reflect the unique spiritual and cultural traditions of the people of Do Son. The festival section includes exciting buffalo fights showcasing the strength and bravery of the competing buffaloes, which have been carefully selected, raised, and trained.
This year’s festival will feature 32 buffaloes in the preliminary round. Four local communal houses and temples — Nghe Temple, Ngoc Xuyen Communal House, Nam Communal House, and Ngoc Hai Communal House in Do Son Ward — are each permitted to register seven buffaloes. In addition, the owners of the four highest-performing buffaloes at the 2025 festival are each allowed to enter one additional buffalo in the competition.

A notable change at this year's festival is the restoration of the full two-round competition format, consisting of a preliminary round and a final round, after eight years during which only the final round was held.
This is the second consecutive year that Do Son Ward has coordinated with the Vietnam Television Sports Center and Hai Phong Newspaper, Radio & Television to strengthen media coverage and promote the festival. It is also the first year that Do Son Ward has taken the lead in organizing the event.
In addition to the festival's main activities, local authorities will organize OCOP product exhibitions, a food festival, and various side events to serve visitors and enhance the overall festival experience.

To date, preparations for the festival have been largely completed. The organizing committee has developed plans to ensure public security, traffic management, fire prevention and firefighting, and crowd control within the stadium. Infrastructure upgrades have also been carried out, including reinforcement of fencing systems, the installation of buffalo exit gates and emergency exits, and other safety measures to ensure the well-being of residents and visitors.
The organizers plan to issue 12,000 invitations for the preliminary round and 18,000 invitations for the final round. Large LED screens will be installed outside the stadium to allow residents and tourists to follow the matches.
The preliminary round of the Do Son Traditional Buffalo Fighting Festival – VTV 2026 is scheduled to take place on July 21, 2026 (the 8th day of the 6th lunar month), with the top 16 buffaloes advancing to the final round. The final round is expected to be held on September 19, 2026 (the 9th day of the 8th lunar month) at the central stadium of Do Son Ward.
