The sacred area of Tam Ban Mountain in Nguyen Trai Ward, Hai Phong City, is an ideal destination for those who enjoy exploring nature and seeking balance in life.

Hiking among ancient chestnut trees
Tam Ban, a cluster of three adjoining peaks embracing Thanh Mai Pagoda, has long been known for its rare ancient chestnut forest ecosystem and the tranquil Buddhist cultural heritage of the Truc Lam Zen sect.
From the foot of the mountain in Nguyen Trai Ward, a winding trail leads toward the summit, snaking beneath the dense green canopy of the natural forest.
Setting out early in the morning, visitors are easily captivated by the cool, fresh air. Each step up the moss-covered stone stairs brings them deeper into nature's symphony, accompanied by birdsong, wind rustling through the leaves and the earthy fragrance of autumn.
As they climb higher, the vegetation becomes increasingly diverse. Hundreds-year-old chestnut trees, with their rugged trunks covered in ancient moss, stand like silent forest guardians, bearing witness to the passage of time.
Nguyen Van Hai, a hiking enthusiast from central Hai Phong, shared his excitement: “I've climbed many mountains in northern Vietnam, but Tam Ban offers a very special experience. The climb here is neither too steep nor dangerous; instead, it's relaxing and restorative. Walking beneath the cool forest canopy, occasionally catching glimpses of sunlight filtering through the leaves and looking out at the winding river in the distance, I feel as though all the fatigue of everyday life simply disappears.”
The highlight of the Tam Ban hike is reaching Thanh Mai Pagoda, a birthplace of the Truc Lam Zen sect founded by its second patriarch, Phap Loa, in the 14th century. The ancient pagoda nestles against the mountainside like a precious gem hidden amid lush greenery. After the strenuous climb, visitors can rest in the pagoda courtyard, breathe in the faint fragrance of incense and admire panoramic views of the peaceful surrounding landscape, finding a profound sense of tranquility that is difficult to put into words.
The next stop is the excavated site of the old Thanh Mai Pagoda on Tam Ban Mountain, where visitors can admire the maple forest as its leaves change color. Here, they can spread out a mat, camp, relax and sample local specialties, enjoying a leisurely break amid the unspoiled natural surroundings.
Connecting nature and heritage

More than just a recreational sporting activity, exploring Tam Ban Mountain offers promising opportunities to develop ecotourism alongside spiritual and cultural tourism in the area. The harmonious combination of pristine natural landscapes and longstanding historical values is key to attracting growing numbers of domestic and international visitors.
Assessing the distinctive value of this trekking route, Nguyen Van Cuong, Deputy Head of the Con Son-Kiep Bac Relic Management Board, said: “Tam Ban Mountain and Thanh Mai Pagoda form an inseparable whole, both geographically and culturally. In recent years, there has been a clear increase in the number of visitors coming here to hike, camp and learn about local history.
“We work closely with local authorities to welcome visitors while stepping up efforts to raise awareness about protecting the ancient chestnut forest, maintaining environmental cleanliness and preserving the tranquil atmosphere of this Buddhist sanctuary. Our top priority is to develop tourism while preserving the site's pristine character and cultural essence.”
Hoang Thi Thuy, Director of Viet Flow International Travel Co., Ltd. in Le Thanh Nghi Ward, said: “Green tourism and easy-to-moderate trekking combined with local cultural experiences are now major trends among young travelers and families. Tam Ban offers everything they are looking for: convenient access, manageable hiking terrain, beautiful scenery throughout the year and, especially, the rich cultural heritage of Thanh Mai Pagoda.
“We have been developing one-day tours to Tam Ban. With further investment in eco-friendly signage, environmentally conscious rest stops and local tour guide services, Tam Ban will undoubtedly become a standout destination on Hai Phong's tourism map.”
Amid the fast pace of urban life, spending a day walking slowly through Tam Ban Mountain is more than a trip to explore scenic landscapes. It is also a journey to reconnect with oneself and gain a deeper appreciation for the invaluable natural and cultural heritage bestowed upon Hai Phong.
