Hung Thang commune, located in the southern part of Hai Phong city, is blessed by nature with a vast mangrove forest stretching over hundreds of hectares along the coast.
Fascinating experience
Vinh Quang mangrove forest is not only the “green lung” of the Northern coastal region but also one of the rare destinations that still preserve its pristine, rustic, and vibrant beauty amid the fast-paced rhythm of modern development.
From the center of Hai Phong city, it takes just over an hour to reach the coastal area of Vinh Quang. The seaside dike road stretches long, flanked by sparkling shrimp ponds and fish farms glistening under the sunlight. From afar, the forest looks like an endless green carpet stretching all the way to the waves, where land meets the sea.
Covering an area of 809.3 hectares, Vinh Quang mangrove forest was formed over many years by the alluvial deposits from the Thai Binh river mouth. Salt-tolerant species such as mangrove apple, Avicennia, and Rhizophora interlace to create a diverse and intact ecosystem.
Nguyen Van Loc, who has been attached to the forest for nearly 30 years, said that Vinh Quang not only holds the distinctive wild beauty of the coastal region but is also home to hundreds of rare species of fauna and flora. It serves as a habitat and breeding ground for various waterbirds and migratory birds, as well as a living environment for shrimp, crabs, fish, clams, and cockles, playing an important role in the livelihoods of local residents.
What makes Vinh Quang mangrove forest particularly attractive to visitors is its simple, untouched charm bestowed by nature. Unlike many commercialized tourist destinations, this place retains the wild beauty of the coastal region, where humans live in harmony with nature.
Visitors can explore a nearly 1-km trail through the mangrove apple forest, paddle kayaks through canopies of trees, or catch shrimp, crabs, and fish on the mudflats.
Le Minh Hang, a visitor from Ha Noi, said: “I have traveled to many places, but nowhere has made me feel such peace. Every moment spent under the trees in the forest, I could feel the breath of nature and the slow, friendly rhythm of coastal life. It’s a feeling that’s hard to find amid the noise of the city.”
Ecotourism tours to Vinh Quang mangrove forest are now being included in the itineraries of several Hai Phong travel companies, linking tourism with natural conservation. “We design tours that allow visitors to explore nature up close while preserving its pristine beauty, avoiding negative impacts on the environment. Our goal is to keep the forest green, the sea clean, and ensure visitors leave with a sense of respect for nature,” said Nguyen Truong Tien, Director of Golden Route Travel Company.
Joint conservation
In recent years, the authorities and residents of Hung Thang commune have been actively engaged in protecting and developing the mangrove forest. Numerous reforestation and natural regeneration programs have been implemented to expand the forest area and restore degraded zones. Alongside these efforts are community-based ecotourism activities that not only generate income for locals but also raise awareness about environmental protection.
Tran Dinh Nhuan, Vice Chairman of the commune People’s Committee, said that in the coming period, the locality will coordinate with agencies and organizations to plant new mangrove apple and Avicennia trees across nearly 1,000 hectares of coastal mangrove forest. This will create a large, biodiverse area that attracts both domestic and international tourists, especially during holidays. The commune will also strengthen the management of local businesses and travel agencies organizing ecotourism activities in the mangrove area.
Preserving and developing Vinh Quang mangrove forest is not only the responsibility of the local authorities and people but also a shared mission of the entire community. Every tree planted and every eco-conscious visit contributes to keeping the forest green, the sea clean, and ensuring that this pristine beauty endures through time.
