Greenhouses and net houses are giving agricultural production in Hai Phong a new look.

Increasing value from every plot of land

Improving production efficiency and increasing the value generated from farmland are priorities for many farming households and cooperatives. Investing in greenhouses and net houses helps reduce the impact of weather, gives farmers greater control over growing conditions and creates opportunities to introduce modern farming techniques.

According to the Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection under the Department of Agriculture and Environment, 36 communes and wards across the city now have greenhouse and net-house facilities covering nearly 140 hectares in total. Farmers grow high-value crops in these structures, including melons, grapes, flowers and hydroponic vegetables. Truong Tan Commune has the largest area, at more than 97 hectares, followed by Tran Hung Dao Ward with 3.7 hectares, Luu Kiem Ward with 3.5 hectares and Thanh Mien Commune with 3.25 hectares.

In Truong Tan Commune, Tan Minh Duc Cooperative has developed nearly 70 hectares of greenhouses and net houses, producing vegetables and fruit in line with VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards and partnering with businesses to market its produce. Thanks to its structured production processes, each hectare of greenhouse and net-house facilities can generate an annual profit of VND 1 billion to VND 1.2 billion.

Hoang Anh Thu, Deputy Director of Tan Minh Duc Cooperative, said: “Growing crops in greenhouses and net houses gives the cooperative greater control over cultivation conditions, reduces the impact of weather and improves produce quality. Alongside applying VietGAP and GlobalGAP production standards, the cooperative also focuses on using resources efficiently.”

The results achieved by these high-tech farming models are encouraging more residents to adopt new production methods. In addition to greenhouses and net houses, various techniques are being introduced to improve control over growing conditions, use water and agricultural inputs more efficiently, and reduce pest and disease risks.

Linking technology with commercial farming

To encourage changes in production methods, Hai Phong will continue to support investment in greenhouses and net houses during 2026–2030 under Resolution No. 51 of the municipal People’s Council, which sets out mechanisms and policies to promote concentrated commercial agricultural production.

Under the policy, eligible greenhouse and net-house facilities must cover at least 1,000 square meters. Each structure must be at least 3.2 meters wide and at least 3 meters high, and meet requirements for structural design, materials and roof slope. To qualify for support, facilities must be built in locations consistent with local planning and development orientations and must not be in areas earmarked for conversion to non-agricultural land use within three years of construction.

Luong Thi Kiem, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said high-tech applications were gradually transforming agricultural production, giving farmers greater control over irrigation, temperature and pests and diseases. Digitalising production was also essential to improving the competitiveness of agricultural products and expanding markets, she said. During 2026–2030, the city will continue to promote high-tech agriculture.
