Ca Tru is a traditional and unique art form in the north of Vietnam. From the cradle of Ca Tru in the northern coastal region, the Dong Mon Ca Tru tradition is being steadily and strongly revived.
When people talk about ca tru in the northern coastal region, many immediately think of Dong Mon village, now part of Hoa Binh ward. Dong Mon is regarded as the birthplace that preserves the distinctive values of an art form that has existed for centuries within the nation's cultural flow.
In 2009, UNESCO recognized Vietnamese ca tru as an intangible cultural heritage . That recognition not only confirmed ca tru's unique artistic value but also placed a heavy responsibility on efforts to preserve and pass the tradition to future generations.
Aware of this, local authorities have for years given special attention to conserving Dong Mon ca tru. Starting from an initial core of 18 members, the Dong Mon Ca Tru Club now counts 25 core members.
When artists can make a living from their heritage, the heritage gains the conditions for sustainable development. Ca tru is therefore becoming truly present in today's life. That presence motivates practitioners to promote the heritage's value more widely and to contribute to Hai Phong's cultural and tourism development as Hai Phong aims to become a city of music.
