Hai Phong to focus on developing five key sports

In mass sports, Hai Phong aims to have more than 45% of its population regularly participating in sports by 2030. The city targets all communes and wards having standard sports facilities; each school having one multi-purpose gymnasium; and all villages, residential groups and industrial parks having public exercise facilities.

In high-performance sports, Hai Phong will focus investment on five key sports, namely football, volleyball, table tennis, rowing and shooting, and 10 priority ones.

Rowing will maintain its position as the country’s No. 1 sport; shooting will strive to win an ASIAD gold medal and secure a place at the Olympics; while football and volleyball will maintain their positions in the national top five.

The training scale is expected to reach more than 1,400 athletes by 2030, ensuring that Hai Phong maintains its top-five position at the 10th (2026) and 11th (2030) National Sports Games.

Looking toward 2045, Hai Phong aims to have athletes winning Olympic and world championship medals. Notably, from 2035, the city’s youth men’s football will operate independently without using the State budget through transfer revenues, while the city aims to have two professional football clubs competing in national competitions.

To realize the above targets, Hai Phong will step up socialization and apply modern sports medicine, while planning land reserves for the construction of two new international-standard stadiums in the eastern and western areas of the city.
