With a silver medal at the 2025 International Biology Olympiad, Nguyen Huu Thanh has once again demonstrated the strength of Hai Phong’s elite education system, which has consistently produced students who win international and regional prizes.
At noon on July 29, Noi Bai Airport was adorned with vibrant flower bouquets as delegations welcomed back the national team from the 2025 International Biology Olympiad, proudly returning home with four medals (one gold, two silver, and one bronze).
Radiant with joy, silver medalist Nguyen Huu Thanh, a grade 12 biology major at Tran Phu High School for the Gifted, said: “I feel truly happy and grateful for the warm welcome from my family, my school, the Department of Education and Training, and the city leaders. This is a great motivation for me and future students to strive even harder.”
Notably, Thanh has now contributed twice to Hai Phong’s record of international achievements. In 2024, while still an 11th grader, he competed in the Avicenna International Biology Olympiad in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, where he impressively earned a silver medal and ranked 15th out of 120 contestants.
Proud of his student’s continued success, Principal Doan Thai Son of Tran Phu High School for the Gifted remarked that Hai Phong students have continuously been selected for national teams to attend international Olympiads and achieved excellent results.
In the 2023–2024 academic year alone, four Hai Phong students competed in regional and international competitions, all bringing home medals, including one gold, two silvers, and two bronzes, achieving a 100% success rate.
Over the past decade, Hai Phong students have won more than 30 prestigious medals at regional and international Olympiads. Notable achievements include Nguyen Si Hieu (grade 12 biology major), who won a gold medal at the 2024 International Biology Olympiad; Nguyen Thanh Duy (grade 12 physics major), who claimed both a silver at the 2024 International Physics Olympiad and a bronze at the Asian Physics Olympiad; and Nguyen Tung Lam (grade 12 informatics major), who secured a silver medal at the 2024 Asian Informatics Olympiad.
Beyond international stages, Hai Phong’s elite education maintains its strong presence in national competitions. In the 2024–2025 academic year alone, the city’s students won 199 national prizes in academic subjects, maintaining its position among the country's leading localities.
In the National Science and Technology Competition, Hai Phong earned six awards, including one project selected for international competition.
Principal Doan Thai Son emphasized that these proud accomplishments are the result of long-term investment by the city authorities and the education and training sector. Highlighted efforts include learning and talent encouragement policies and infrastructure investment to transform specialized schools into key institutions for nurturing gifted students.
At a ceremony honoring the achievements of students and teachers at the 2025 International Biology Olympiad, Vice Chairman of Hai Phong People’s Committee Nguyen Minh Hung affirmed: “The city always prioritizes investment in education and training, while also promoting science and technology and building an innovation ecosystem. These are the foundations for Hai Phong to strengthen elite education, nurture talent, and attract high-quality human resources to support rapid and sustainable development in the coming years.”
