Essence of Chu Dau ceramics

Regarded as a scholarly ceramic line with elegant forms, distinctive glazes and highly artistic motifs, Chu Dau pottery in Hai Phong city has not only been brilliantly revived but also continued to spread the cultural and historical values of the land.

Gốm Chu Đậu ở xã Thái Tân (Hải Phòng) là dòng gốm cao cấp có niên đại khoảng thế kỷ XIII - XIV phát triển rực rỡ vào thế kỷ XV - XVI. Nhưng sang thế kỷ XVII, dòng gốm cổ bị thất truyền. Sau hành trình dài khai quật, tìm kiếm, nghiên cứu, gốm Chu Đậu dần hồi sinh.
Chu Dau pottery in Thai Tan commune, Hai Phong city, is a high-end ceramic line dating back to the 13th–14th centuries and flourishing in the 15th–16th centuries. By the 17th century, however, this ancient line had fallen into obscurity. After a long journey of excavation, research and restoration, Chu Dau pottery gradually returned to life.

Compared with other lines, Chu Dau pottery stands out with the qualities of being “as thin as paper, as clear as jade, as white as ivory and resonant like a bell.” The ceramics are crafted from white clay, and especially the glaze is made from the ash of cai hoa vang sticky rice husks, creating a unique beauty.

The production techniques of Chu Dau ceramics reach an exceptional level of sophistication, with its signature motifs and decorative patterns, engraved, carved or embossed, all requiring meticulous craftsmanship.
Họa tiết vẽ trên gốm phản ánh sinh động cuộc sống vùng đồng bằng Bắc ộ với những nét vẽ tinh tế nhưng không kém phần phóng khoáng, tự do.
Painted motifs vividly reflect life in the Northern delta, executed with refined yet free and expressive strokes.
Những nghệ nhân làm gốm Chu Đậu có thể chỉ là thợ vẽ nghiệp dư nhưng vẫn thể hiện được hồn cốt của dòng gốm cổ qua từng nét vẽ. Đây là sự trân trọng với những giá trị truyền thống của thế hệ đi sau, luôn trăn trở giữ nghề và phát triển nghề.
Chu Dau ceramic artisans may be amateur painters, yet they still convey the soul of this ancient tradition in every detail. This is an expression of respect for heritage and a commitment to preserving and developing the craft.
