As Christmas approaches, the atmosphere in Dong Binh Parish in Khuc Thua Du commune, Hai Phong city becomes livelier and warmer than ever.
Preparations for Christmas at Dong Binh church have spread into every corner, with parishioners having worked tirelessly on decorations for nearly two months.The highlight of this year’s Christmas season in Dong Binh is a handmade reindeer sleigh created by parishioners themselves.According to the community, a set of four reindeer can cost up to 70 million VND if purchased. “If it’s too expensive, we will make it ourselves,” they said. In just over a month, carpenters, welders and electricians in the parish join efforts: some cut the steel frames or shape the antlers, while others carefully paint and installed lights.Parishioners also erect a large Christmas tree and install a statue of Our Lady of La Vang. Every detail is crafted by hand, carefully completed to maintain a solemn yet familiar atmosphere.The wooden Dong Binh church, built in 1895 on the foundation of an older sanctuary, carries more than a century of historic architecture. Each Christmas, the repair and decoration work takes on added significance as a way of preserving traditions handed down through generations.While the adults are busy decorating, children gather at the churchyard late in the afternoon, keeping their familiar routines as the “breath of faith” in Dong Binh Parish.The parish has nearly 1,000 members, most of whom are farmers, according to Vu Ngoc Niem from the Parish Council. Each year, as Christmas approaches, parishioners begin preparations early to decorate the church grounds and organize activities for the celebration.As night falls, colorful lights illuminate Dong Binh Parish, standing out amid the peaceful surroundings of the Catholic hamlet.A model of the Holy Family at work is displayed in the churchyard, depicting the simple yet warm daily life of the family of Jesus.The handmade reindeer stand prominently at the entrance beneath the bright Christmas tree, while a bas-relief depicting Gospel scenes rests further inside, creating a Christmas space that is both lively and reverent.The nativity scene stands at the center, with foam structures skillfully shaped into rocky forms and warm lights cast upon the manger. Inside, the statues of the Infant Jesus, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph are arranged with care, creating a simple yet heartwarming corner for Christmas.Christmas seems to arrive early in Dong Binh. Just walking along the paths leading to the church, one can feel the festive spirit spreading through every home and every corner of the parish. For nearly two months, parishioners have worked diligently, contributing their part to create a bright and joyful Christmas season filled with anticipation.
