Alongside popular destinations such as Cat Ba, Do Son, and Con Son – Kiep Bac relic site, Hai Phong also possesses rich urban resources to develop experiential inner-city tourism products.

Strong advantage

Hai Phong has a long history and a wealth of cultural relics while developing into a modern, civilized city, an ideal foundation for unique urban tourism products. In the city center, streets lined with the Opera House, the Post Office, and French colonial villas interspersed with modern buildings are often likened to an “urban architectural museum.” These provide perfect materials for developing “city walks,” “storytelling tours,” and urban photography experiences.

In recent years, culinary and night-street culture tours have become distinctive brands, drawing thousands of young visitors to Hai Phong every week.

Notably, the “Sacred Traces of Hang Kenh” night tour has become a highlight among Hai Phong’s inner-city tourism offerings. The tour aims to convey the unique story of Hang Kenh communal house. “It’s more than just a performance since audiences feel as if they are living within the story of an ancient village amid a modern city. It’s truly emotional and thought-provoking,” said Dao Thi Ngoc Anh, a visitor from Da Nang.

In western Hai Phong, Bach Dang walking street in Le Thanh Nghi ward regularly hosts activities such as music and street art performances, not only providing weekend entertainment for locals but also adding new attractions for tourists to explore.

Distinctive, multi-experience products targeted

In recent years, Hai Phong has taken initial steps to tap into urban tourism, changing perceptions and approaches. Walking tours that explore urban architecture and culture while combining food and street art have drawn increasing numbers of visitors. Many young groups now prefer food tours to experience the city in a more spontaneous and intimate way.

For urban tourism to truly become a signature product, the city needs long-term, comprehensive solutions, starting with continued investment in urban infrastructure. A city tour is only appealing when visitors find it convenient to move around, easily access information, and enjoy comfortable walking spaces. “Good infrastructure creates a sense of civility, that’s the first impression of a destination,” said Hoang Thu Trang, Vice Director of Ha Noi Tourism and Trade Co., Ltd.

According to Tran Van Ngoc, Vice Director of the city Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the tourism sector will soon integrate smart tourism systems into Hai Phong’s smart tourism platform. “There will be apps allowing visitors to explore destinations on their phones, TVs, or computers at home. After the virtual experience, they can book tours and attractions easily, saving time, money, and enjoying safe, engaging experiences,” said Ngoc.

The sector is also focusing on training inner-city tour guides and community storytellers. Local residents, artisans, food stall owners, and craft shopkeepers can all become “cultural ambassadors” with proper support and training, as Chairman of the city People’s Committee Le Ngoc Chau once said: “Every citizen is a ‘communication envoy,’ a tourism ambassador helping make Hai Phong a ‘must-experience’ destination for every traveler.”
