Opening up trade links

Under a resolution passed by the National Assembly on August 24, 2026 to adjust its project investment policy, the Lao Cai – Ha Noi – Hai Phong railway will begin at the cross-border rail connection point in Lao Cai Province and end at Nam Hai Phong Station.

The main line will be approximately 363 km long, with branch lines totaling about 63 km, passing through six provinces and cities of Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Ha Noi, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, and Hai Phong.

The project will serve passenger and freight transport, with a preliminary total investment of approximately VND 289.339 trillion. It aims to achieve substantial completion no later than 2030.

Once operational, the railway is expected to strengthen connectivity along the Lao Cai – Ha Noi – Hai Phong economic corridor, facilitating interregional transport and international rail freight services. In Hai Phong, stations will be located and developed according to their functions and the development orientations of their respective areas.

Specifically, Binh Giang Station is planned to serve freight transport and cargo yards; Hai Duong Nam Station will serve passengers, with provision for freight transport; and Tu Ky Station will serve as a passing station, with plans for a possible upgrade to an intermediate station. Nam Hai Phong Station will serve passengers, freight, and logistics, while Nam Dinh Vu Station will serve as a passing station. Port stations will include Lach Huyen, Dinh Vu, and Nam Do Son.

With coordinated investment, these stations could become important transport hubs, reducing transshipment steps, facilitating the movement of goods, and expanding travel options. Improved connectivity will also enable localities to capitalize on their advantages, attract investment, and expand their economic development opportunities.

Seizing opportunities and driving development

In Gia Loc Commune, Hai Duong Nam Station is planned to serve passenger and freight transport, with a total floor area of approximately 6,000 m2. The station yard is expected to have two platforms and six tracks, along with passenger facilities such as platform canopies, an underpass, a plaza, passenger pick-up and drop-off areas, parking, and connections to other modes of transport.

Doan Ngoc Thuan, Vice Chairman of the Gia Loc Commune People's Committee, said Hai Duong Nam Station presented an opportunity for the locality to expand its development space, strengthen connectivity, and attract investment. The station would not only serve passenger travel and freight transport but could also promote trade, services, logistics, and related economic sectors, create more jobs and improve residents' incomes.

In Ke Sat Commune, Binh Giang Station is planned to cover approximately 10.5 ha. It is located near the expanded Phuc Dien Industrial Park, Provincial Roads 394, 395, and 394B, and the specialized economic zone. This location offers prospects for connecting rail freight services with production activities, goods distribution, and industrial areas.

For businesses, an additional freight transport option would diversify choices, improve supply chain efficiency, and expand market access. Le Dinh Chien, a representative of Anh Thang Garment Co., Ltd., said rail transport had advantages in safety and environmental friendliness. If operated appropriately, it could enable businesses to transport import and export goods via international through-trains at more competitive costs.

Railway stations in Hai Phong’s rural areas offer new development prospects. With coordinated infrastructure investment and better use of connectivity advantages, the railway will provide additional momentum for growth, expand the economic space, create livelihoods, and improve residents’ quality of life.
