The development of strategic transport infrastructure is opening up new space and creating momentum for Hai Phong to break through as a comprehensive growth pole.
Unlocking economic flows through connectivity infrastructure
In 2026, the port city of Hai Phong resembles a vast construction site, with 31 key projects and works being rolled out simultaneously. From interregional transport infrastructure and international seaports to strategic industrial parks and urban areas, construction is being actively accelerated by agencies and localities.
This year's list of key projects comprises two projects being inaugurated, 16 newly launched projects and 13 projects carried over from the previous year, creating a large-scale infrastructure investment program that will help enhance long-term competitiveness.
Playing the backbone role in this strategy is the Lao Cai – Ha Noi – Hai Phong Railway Construction Investment Project. It is designed as a standard-gauge railway nearly 391 km long, connecting the Lao Cai international border gate with Lach Huyen deep-water seaport, the gateway to the world for the northern key economic region. The project covers a total area of about 59.86 hectares, with an estimated cost of about VND 1.237 trillion.
Hai Phong is also making its mark as a series of billion-dollar maritime and industrial projects enter the final stretch. According to Pham Van Thep, Head of the Hai Phong Economic Zone Authority, 2026 marks an important milestone as the Lach Huyen port area officially puts all six deep-water berths into synchronized operation, with a total berth length of about 2.4 km and designed to receive large container ships of up to more than 200,000 DWT (equivalent to 18,000-20,000 TEUs).
Notably, the city is urgently accelerating the development of the planned area from Berths 7 to 12. At the same time, new industrial parks such as Thuy Nguyen, Kim Thanh 2, Binh Giang, Nam Trang Cat, Ngu Phuc, Hoang Dieu and Tran Duong - Hoa Binh are being given a strong push, consolidating Hai Phong's position as a leading logistics and import-export hub in the North.
Expectations and determination
The synchronized development of major infrastructure and seaport projects is raising high expectations among logistics businesses for supply chain optimization. Developing multiple modes of transport, combining waterways and railways along different corridors, will help move goods more efficiently, reduce pressure on road traffic, promote green and sustainable logistics, and cut costs for import-export businesses across the region.
To turn these expectations into reality, the city's political system is taking action with strong determination. The Hai Phong Economic Zone Authority is focusing on planning appraisal, environmental procedures and construction to accompany investors. Policy support is creating an open investment environment ready to welcome leading global maritime and logistics groups.
When major projects such as the Lao Cai – Ha Noi – Hai Phong railway are completed by 2030 at the latest, together with the urban and interregional transport systems being upgraded, Hai Phong's infrastructure bottlenecks will gradually be removed. Expanded urban space, rising land values and the formation of modern logistics service chains in planned areas will create momentum for comprehensive development in the port city.
With 31 key projects being implemented simultaneously, 2026 is a pivotal year for Hai Phong to create a major boost and affirm its role as an economic locomotive and a dynamic, sustainable growth pole of the northern key economic region and the country in the new era.
