Following Uncle Ho’s example by donating land for road construction
From plots of land, rows of trees and boundary walls voluntarily donated by local residents, many roads in Hai Phong have been widened.
Unitedly donating land to widen roads
In Phu Thai Commune, the movement to build model new-style rural areas has been widely implemented along inter-village and inter-hamlet roads. Residents have voluntarily donated land and dismantled fences and structures to widen roads.
In Cong Khe Village, the approximately 950-m-long main village road was widened from 4 m to 7 m, with a total investment of nearly VND 9 billion. To facilitate construction, 34 households voluntarily donated more than 400 m2 of residential and garden land. Many households also proactively dismantled gates, fences and structures without requesting support or compensation.
Nguyen Van Sanh, Secretary of the Party Cell and Head of Cong Khe Village, said that, in implementing the 2026 thematic program of the Commune Party Committee on “Studying and following President Ho Chi Minh’s teachings to continue improving people’s living standards and building socialism associated with socialist people,” the Party Cell identified mobilizing residents to donate land and widen main roads as a breakthrough task.
In Lai Khe Commune, the movement to donate land for road construction has also received strong support. Along the road connecting Thuong Do 1 and Thuong Do 2 villages, many families have hung signs in front of their homes bearing the words: “My family voluntarily donates land for the authorities to build the road,” demonstrating their sense of responsibility to the community.
All 75 households in Thuong Do 1 Village agreed to donate more than 2,000 m2 of land. More than 30 households in Thuong Do 2 Village donated over 1,000 m2 of land and voluntarily dismantled structures. Nearly 150 households in Pham Xa 1 and Pham Xa 2 villages donated more than 3,000 m2 of land to widen the inter-village road from 3.5 m to 7 m.
Spreading more exemplary deeds
During his lifetime, President Ho Chi Minh advised: “Party members go first, the people follow.” His teaching is being put into practice by Party members and residents across the city through ordinary yet meaningful deeds.
In Thanh Trung Residential Area, Chu Van An Ward, the straight, spacious roads seen today were once narrow concrete roads. Nguyen Lap, a member of the Party Cell, donated more than 1,000 m2 of land and provided tens of thousands of bricks to help 21 households rebuild their boundary walls after dismantling structures to make way for road expansion.
Inspired by his exemplary action, Nguyen Huu Binh, a person with disabilities in Thanh Trung Residential Area, also twice dismantled his boundary wall and donated hundreds of square meters of land for road construction. He was then awarded a certificate of merit by the Prime Minister for his deed.
According to the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Hai Phong, over the past five years, citizens have donated tens of thousands of square meters of land, worth hundreds of billions of VND in total, along with many workdays to build roads and bridges and improve villages and residential areas. The movement among Party members and residents across the city to donate land for road construction as part of new-style rural building is a practical action in studying and following Uncle Ho’s example.
Dang Van Hach, Vice Chairman of the city Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, emphasized that studying and following Uncle Ho’s example does not necessarily have to begin with great things. Sometimes, it is simply a family giving up part of its land, dismantling a boundary wall or cutting down a perennial tree so that a shared road can be widened by a few meters. Such seemingly small actions help create wider and more beautiful roads; more importantly, they foster trust, consensus and a sense of responsibility for the community among citizens.
