Digital transformation in healthcare helps connect data, reduce paperwork, shorten waiting time and provide patients with more convenient and human-centered experiences, especially during follow-up visits.
On the day of his follow-up appointment at the Outpatient Department of Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, Dao Minh Vuong from Dong Gioi Dong residential quarter, An Duong Ward, checks his phone battery and health insurance information on VNeID app. With just a smartphone connected to a 4G network, Vuong can complete the registration procedures for his follow-up visit without having to carry numerous documents as before.Upon arriving at the general outpatient area, Vuong is welcomed and given instructions.Patients go to the reception area to complete several additional procedures. Digital data is gradually replacing registration procedures using paper records.A medical worker scans the patient’s citizen ID card for identity verification.Second-degree specialist physician Bui Thi Quynh retrieves Vuong’s medical records from his previous follow-up visits to continue the examination, removes tests that are still valid from the list, and retrieves X-ray images from the electronic system. Electronic medical records help reduce the time needed to verify information.A doctor examines Vuong.Patients wait for their examinations while monitoring their queue numbers on an electronic screen. The examination process is more transparent, convenient and streamlined.Pharmacist Pham Thanh Ha of the Outpatient Department said that when a citizen ID card, health insurance card or VNeID app is scanned, the information is first entered into the hospital’s database. Within 24 hours after a patient completes their examination, the data is transferred to the national insurance portal for synchronization, helping create and update their Electronic Health Record on the VNeID app. After undergoing the required tests, Vuong receives consultation from the doctor on his examination results, after which his prescription is adjusted and a follow-up appointment is scheduled. The information is immediately updated in the system, making subsequent visits more convenient.Vuong says the follow-up visit was very convenient. The patient pays hospital fees using a cashless payment method. Another step has been shortened through the application of digital transformation in healthcare.Medical examination and treatment data is stored in the hospital’s system. When patients go to the hospital pharmacy to purchase medicine, the data is also updated according to the progress of their examination and treatment, making the process much more convenient.Digital transformation in healthcare is not merely about changing examination and treatment procedures. It also makes healthcare more convenient for every patient, particularly younger people who regularly adopt new technologies.
