Making English a second language in Hai Phong schools
Improving teachers' English proficiency has become one of the key priorities of Hai Phong's education sector since the summer of 2026.
Teachers and schools step up efforts
In response to the Ministry of Education and Training's 2026 Free English Self-Learning Month for Teachers, the Hai Phong Department of Education and Training has rolled out the program across educational institutions, creating opportunities for teachers to strengthen their English skills and gradually make English a second language in schools.
In addition to general education teachers, preschool teachers have also taken the initiative to improve their English proficiency. During the summer, Sao Bien Preschool in Gia Vien Ward partnered with Enspire Language Center to organize professional development workshops focusing on pronunciation, communication, vocabulary, and language patterns suitable for early childhood care and education.
Alongside encouraging teachers to study independently through digital platforms, online learning materials, and educational support tools, schools have worked with professional training providers to organize development courses, enabling teachers to practice communication skills and improve their use of English in educational activities.
Under the guidance of international instructors, teachers were not only improved their pronunciation and intonation but also introduced to modern teaching methods. As a result, they became more confident in organizing engaging and natural English-language learning activities, allowing children to "learn through play and play through learning" more effectively.
Toward English as a second language
Efforts to improve teachers' English proficiency have brought positive changes in teachers' awareness, inspiring a stronger commitment to self-learning and professional development while gradually fostering a vibrant English-learning culture throughout the city's education sector.
Nguyen Thu Huong, a teacher at Dinh Tien Hoang Primary School in Hong Bang Ward, said that the knowledge and skills she gained from the training would help her integrate English into age-appropriate classroom activities, beginning with familiar content such as greetings, songs, games, and simple vocabulary to help students become familiar with the language and develop natural communication skills.
Having worked with Hai Phong teachers on English training for many years, Hoang Dieu Linh, Director of Enspire Language Center, said participating teachers had demonstrated a strong commitment to learning, taking an active and open-minded approach throughout the program.
The center aims to ensure the knowledge acquired through training can be applied effectively in real teaching practice. Therefore, all training sessions are conducted entirely in English and incorporate interactive activities, games, and presentations.
With coordinated efforts by the education sector, schools, and teachers themselves, Hai Phong is steadily advancing toward its goal of making English a second language in schools, laying a solid foundation for improving the quality of human resources and strengthening the international competitiveness of future generations.
