Vietnam's international air passengers rise 15.4% in first half
International passenger traffic reached 26.2 million in the first six months of 2026, up 15.4% from a year earlier, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).
Vietnamese airlines carried 9.6 million international passengers during the period, up 0.2% year on year and accounting for 36.6% of total international passenger traffic. Domestic passenger traffic totaled 18.7 million passengers, an increase of 0.3% from the same period last year.
International air cargo volume reached 706,700 tons, up 21.3% year-on-year. Vietnamese airlines transported 119,000 tons, an increase of 8.6%, accounting for 16.8% of total international cargo traffic. Domestic air cargo volume fell 7% year on year to 216,400 tons.
Vietnamese airlines currently operate 109 international routes serving 22 countries and territories, while airlines from 41 countries and territories operate 235 scheduled routes to Vietnam.
The Director general of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam instructed aviation agencies and operators to strictly comply with aviation safety regulations, as well as standards and recommendations issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). They were also instructed to strengthen hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control, improve the effectiveness of Safety Management Systems (SMS), and foster a stronger safety culture across the aviation sector.
Airlines, airport operators, aircraft maintenance organizations, air navigation service providers and other aviation-related entities were instructed to invest more in training and workforce development, expand the use of digital technologies in safety management and safety data analysis, and proactively identify and address potential risks, particularly during the year-end peak travel season.
