Leveraging local strengths

Tran Phu is widely known as Hai Phong’s traditional incense-making hub, home to three recognized craft villages - Dong Thon, Truc Tri and An Xa. The incense trade not only provides stable incomes for local residents but also represents a distinctive cultural tradition in the locality.

The commune is currently home to nearly 100 incense production facilities, creating jobs for more than 1,000 local workers with monthly incomes ranging from 6 million dong to 15 million dong. Producers have increasingly adopted equipment to improve productivity and product quality.

Since the OCOP program was launched, several incense producers in Tran Phu have actively joined the initiative in an effort to enhance the brand value of the commune’s traditional craft products.

Tran Thi Tuyet, owner of Quoc Bao Huong Gia incense facility, said her family joined the program from its early stages.

“With guidance from local authorities, five of our incense products have now been recognized as OCOP products,” she said. “The certification has helped improve our brand recognition and credibility, making sales easier.”

In addition to its traditional incense craft villages, Tran Phu has developed strongly in agriculture, with spring onions among its key local crops.

Taking advantage of abundant local raw materials, several businesses have expanded into processing and deep-processing agricultural products to increase economic value. Some small household workshops have since grown into companies participating in the OCOP program.

Elevating local products

Tran Phu currently has 31 OCOP-certified products developed by four companies, seven household businesses and one cooperative. The commune has the highest number of OCOP products in western Hai Phong and ranks second citywide after Cat Hai special zone.

The locality also leads in product diversity, with OCOP products developed from both traditional handicrafts and local farm produce. Through the OCOP program, local products have gained higher value and generated stronger economic returns for residents.

The nep cai hoa vang sticky rice wine produced by Nguyen Van Duc’s family was certified three-star OCOP product in 2025.

Nguyen Van Duc, whose family’s traditional nep cai hoa vang sticky rice wine was recognized as an OCOP product earlier this year, said the certification has helped the product gain wider consumer recognition.

According to Duc, rice wine is a specialty product, and OCOP certification helps build consumer trust and confidence in product quality. The program has also encouraged his family to invest more in packaging, labeling and upgrading production processes.

MEJE Vietnam Food Technology JSC has also successfully developed three OCOP-certified sauce products using ingredients from local farming areas. As a newly established company, the business joined the OCOP program to help build its brand.

According to authorities in Tran Phu commune, the locality will continue promoting and supporting OCOP development among local producers in the coming years to help drive socio-economic growth.

Beyond increasing incomes and improving economic efficiency, OCOP products are also helping preserve traditional crafts and encouraging more professional production practices among local businesses and households.
