UNESCO extends its patronage for two Vietnamese science centers
The Executive Board of the UNESCO has decided to extend its patronage for two scientific centers under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

At its 224th session held in Paris, the Executive Board approved decisions to renew the status of Category II Centers under UNESCO’s auspices for another eight years for the International Center for Research and Training in Mathematics (ICRTM) and the International Center for Physics (ICP), both affiliated with VAST.
According to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ngo Le Van, Chairman of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, the continued recognition of these centers reflects their compliance with UNESCO standards and highlights Vietnam’s strong governance capacity as well as its commitment to advancing fundamental science.
In line with national strategies on science, technology, innovation, and international integration, the two centers are not only serving national interests but are also emerging as regional knowledge hubs. They are actively promoting South–South cooperation within ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific region, positioning Vietnam as an active contributor to the global scientific network.
Professor Tran Hong Thai, President of VAST, affirmed that the academy will continue prioritizing mathematics and physics by ensuring staffing for scientists, attracting young talent, expanding international cooperation, and inviting foreign experts for long-term collaboration in Vietnam.
The goal is to develop ICRTM and ICP into core centers of Vietnam’s scientific advancement—contributing not only to fundamental research but also to practical applications such as data modeling, weather forecasting, and emerging technological systems.
Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to UNESCO, noted that this milestone affirms the credibility, position, and meaningful contributions of Vietnam’s fundamental sciences on the international stage. It also forms part of the activities marking the 50th anniversary of Vietnam–UNESCO relations (1976–2026).
With the new eight-year extension cycle, Vietnam aims to broaden cooperation with international scientific centers and partners in ASEAN and Africa, further strengthening ICRTM and ICP as leading centers of excellence in fundamental science in the region.
