Vietnam’s National Assembly debates fuel-related taxes

The 16th National Assembly meets on April 10 for its fifth working day of the first session, with lawmakers set to debate anti-waste efforts and taxes on petrol, oil and aviation fuel.

In the morning, the assembly meets in groups to discuss a supplementary assessment of the implementation of the 2025 socio-economic development plan and state budget, as well as developments in the early months of 2026.

Lawmakers will also review plans for the 2026–2030 period, including the socio-economic development plan, the medium-term public investment plan, the national five-year financial plan, and public debt borrowing and repayment.

The assembly then discusses approval of the 2024 state budget final accounts, anti-waste efforts in 2025, and progress on national gender equality targets.

Also on the agenda are draft amendments to the law on overseas representative missions of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and draft resolutions on coordination mechanisms and specific policies to improve the efficiency of preventing and resolving international investment disputes, as well as on fuel-related taxes.

From 14:00 to 16:30, lawmakers hold a plenary session to discuss draft amendments to the law on emulation and commendation, and the law on belief and religion.

The Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Ethnic and Religious Affairs are expected to clarify issues raised by deputies.

For the remainder of the afternoon, the assembly continues its plenary discussion on the draft resolution on fuel-related taxes, including environmental protection, value-added and special consumption taxes. The finance minister is then expected to respond to lawmakers’ questions.
