The Narcissus flower contest in Hai Phong dates back to the early 20th century and is associated with the refined flower-appreciation tradition of local residents.

According to historical records, from 1920 to 1943, the contest was held ceremonially at Nghe Temple on the eighth day of the second lunar month — the birth anniversary of Female General Le Chan.
