Advancing data integration for a national healthcare database
Vietnam’s health sector is accelerating the rollout of electronic health records and electronic medical records nationwide, aiming to build a unified health data system and improve the quality of medical services.
30 million electronic health records created
The sector is entering a fast-track phase of digital transformation, with electronic medical records identified as a key pillar to enhance healthcare quality, optimize resources, and improve patient satisfaction.
According to the National Health Information Center, the integration of electronic health records into the VNeID application has been completed across all 34 provinces and cities, with around 30 million records created. This is seen as a crucial foundation for the unified management of citizens’ health data nationwide.
Digital transformation - a key priority
Healthcare Deputy Minister Nguyen Tri Thuc said primary healthcare plays a central role in managing citizens’ health records, including preventive care, periodic health check-ups, and community health management at the local level. However, the existence of multiple programs across localities underscores the need for a unified information technology system to ensure effective data management.
The Ministry of Health has instructed all units to prioritize digital transformation and the adoption of electronic medical records as core tasks, with the participation of the entire system.
At the same time, the use of electronic medical records continues to expand. To date, around 1,200 out of 1,650 healthcare facilities nationwide have adopted them in medical examination and treatment. This marks significant progress, helping reduce administrative procedures while improving treatment efficiency and management.
