Import–export turnover surges in January 2026

Although Vietnam’s total import–export turnover in the first month of 2026 declined slightly compared to the previous month, it recorded a sharp increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Nine export items exceed USD 1 billion in January 2026.

According to data from the General Statistics Office under the Ministry of Finance, Vietnam’s total import–export turnover in January 2026 reached USD 88.16 billion, down 0.6 percent compared to December 2025 but up 39 percent year on year. Of which, exports rose by 29.7 percent, while imports increased by 49.2 percent.

Export turnover in January 2026 amounted to USD 43.19 billion, down 2.0 percent month on month. Of this figure, the domestic economic sector accounted for USD 9.51 billion, down 2.0 percent, while the foreign-invested sector (including crude oil) reached USD 33.68 billion, down 1.9 percent.

In January 2026, nine export items recorded export values of over USD 1 billion, accounting for 72.4 percent of total export turnover.

In terms of export structure, processed industrial products reached USD 38.43 billion, making up 89.0 percent of total exports; agricultural and forestry products amounted to USD 3.65 billion (8.5 percent); seafood reached USD 1.01 billion (2.3 percent); and fuels and minerals totaled USD 0.10 billion (0.2 percent).

Merchandise imports in January 2026 reached USD 44.97 billion, up 0.6 percent compared to the previous month. The domestic sector recorded USD 12.91 billion, down 11.4 percent, while the foreign-invested sector reached USD 32.06 billion, up 6.5 percent.

Compared to the same period last year, import turnover in January 2026 surged by 49.2 percent, with the domestic sector rising 18.2 percent and the foreign-invested sector increasing 66.8 percent.

During the month, eight import items recorded values exceeding USD 1 billion, accounting for 64.9 percent of total import turnover, including one item with import value exceeding USD 10 billion, representing 37.0 percent.

The United States remained Vietnam’s largest export market, with export turnover reaching USD 13.9 billion, while China was Vietnam’s largest import market, with import turnover of USD 19.0 billion.
