Vietnam Railways (VNR) has completed a six-month pilot program using B5 biodiesel on Hanoi–Hai Phong line locomotives, showing reliable performance and full compliance with operational standards.

According to VNR, the trial results showed that the locomotives operated reliably and met all technical and operational requirements for train services. However, fuel consumption was higher than with conventional diesel, and further engine modifications and the installation of auxiliary equipment would be required. As a result, additional research and evaluation will be needed before wider deployment.

A VNR representative said that while the initial results were encouraging, the increased fuel usage and technical adjustment requirements mean the solution is not yet ready for large-scale application.

Mr. Bui Van Sang, Deputy Head of the Locomotive and Rolling Stock Department at VNR, said the B5 biodiesel trial is only one of several solutions currently being studied and tested to introduce green fuels for diesel-powered locomotives and railcars.

He noted that these efforts aim to implement the Government’s decisions on green energy transition and to contribute to Viet Nam’s commitment under COP26 to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
