Hai Phong steps up preparedness measures against Nipah virus disease
Hai Phong City is stepping up surveillance and to prevent the introduction and spread of Nipah virus disease (NiV), a highly dangerous Group A infectious disease that currently has neither a vaccine nor a specific treatment.

To prevent the community transmission of NiV, the Hai Phong Department of Health has directed the International Health Quarantine Center to strengthen screening and early detection at points of entry, with a particular focus on travelers from countries with reported Nipah outbreaks. The Hai Phong Department of Health has also instructed relevant agencies to put in place comprehensive response plans for various outbreak scenarios and maintain readiness in terms of personnel, medical supplies, chemicals, equipment and transport to respond swiftly to suspected cases.
Any suspected case must be reported immediately, followed by isolation, sample collection for testing and on-site response measures at the points of entry. Strict personal protective protocols are required for healthcare workers and individuals who have had close contact with suspected or confirmed cases.
The city’s Center for Disease Control (CDC) has been assigned to intensify public information and communication efforts on the disease and preventive measures. Working closely with media agencies and local communities, the CDC aims to raise awareness, prevent public anxiety and promote compliance with disease prevention measures.
Regional health centers have been urged to step up surveillance for suspected cases in both healthcare facilities and the community. Working with the city CDC, they will carry out epidemiological investigations, collect samples from suspected patients and roll out public communication activities on NiV prevention in line with Ministry of Health guidance.
Medical facilities citywide are required to enhance early detection of suspected cases. At the same time, healthcare providers must be ready to treat patients in a timely, safe and effective manner. Infection prevention and control measures are to be reinforced, with strict adherence to personal protective requirements to prevent transmission within medical facilities.
